A Xarelto lawsuit was filed against the Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc. by a consumer who alleges he suffered serious injuries after taking the popular blood thinning medication.
Plaintiff Allen G., an 87-year-old resident of California, was first prescribed Xarelto at the beginning of 2012 to reduce his risk of stroke and embolism. He continued to take Xarelto until an alleged incident on Oct. 15, 2012, in which Allen suffered from uncontrollable, life-threatening gastrointestinal bleeding.
This GI bleeding episode allegedly caused the plaintiff permanent and severe injuries, and continuous pain and emotional distress. According to the Xarelto lawsuit, Allen’s use of Janssen’s anti-coagulant medication “caused Plaintiff to suffer from life-threatening bleeding, as well as other severe and personal injuries which are permanent and lasting in nature, physical pain and mental anguish, including diminished enjoyment of life, as well as the need for lifelong medical treatment, monitoring and/or medications, and fear of developing any of the above named health consequences.”
The Xarelto lawsuit alleges negligence, strict products liability, breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty, fraudulent misrepresentation, fraudulent concealment, negligent misrepresentation, fraud and deceit, and loss of consortium.
The Xarelto Lawsuit is Case No. 3:14-cv-04522, in the U.S District Court for the Northern District of California.
Xarelto Side Effects
Since receiving U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 2011, Xarelto has become a leading anticoagulant drug treatment within the United States, especially for patients who have undergone knee and hip replacement surgery and were later diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, a condition which makes them susceptible to blood clots.
Xarelto was even predicted to surpass more traditional forms of anticoagulants, such as Coumadin (also known as Warfarin).
However, over the course of 2014, a slew of medical and consumer reports were published, claiming that patients suffered from several dangerous, and often fatal, Xarelto side effects.
Some Xarelto side effects that you or a loved one may experience include:
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Pulmonary bleeding
- Abdominal bleeding
- Gastrointestinal bleeding
- Brain hemorrhaging
- Abnormal liver function
- Reduced platelet levels
- Dizziness
- Hemorrhaging in the eyes
- Low blood pressure
- Nose bleeds
- Rectal bleeding
- Headache
- Muscle pain
- Rapid heartbeat
- Bruising
- Edema
