onglyza

Onglyza (Saxagliptin) is one of America’s most popularly prescribed new oral type-2 diabetes drugs in the United States. However, the diabetes drug has been linked to an increased risk of heart failure and pancreatic cancer in patients.

Onglyza side effects have been prominent concerns for the medical community and extensive patient population, which consists of millions type-2 diabetes patients.

Onglyza: Overview

Approved by the FDA in 2009, Onglyza is meant to treat adult type-2 diabetes patients and is designed to help regulate blood sugar.

Along with diet and exercise, Onglyza is meant to prevent diabetic attacks and does not encourage weight gain like other diabetes medications.

Onglyza is apart of the DPP-4 inhibitor drug family, and works by signaling the pancreas to manufacture more insulin to stop the liver from making too much sugar.

The active ingredient of Onglyza, Saxagliptin, works by inhibiting the DPP-4 inhibitor enzyme that prevents the breakdown of GLP-1 hormone. This hormone is released into the blood and signals the pancreas to manufacture insulin, in which is severely reduced in diabetes patients.

By inhibiting DPP-4, Onglyza allowed GLP-1 hormone to remain active in the body for longer periods of time and ultimately allows for a larger production of insulin.

Essentially Onglyza helps reduce blood sugar by reducing the amount of glucose from the pancreas, and to signal increased insulin production after meals.

Overview of Onglyza Side Effects

Manufactured by AstraZeneca, this drug has earned the company millions in sales but is now landing the company in potential legal trouble.

According to British Medical Journal editor Deborah Cohen, DPP-4 inhibitors were said to be the ‘new darlings of diabetes treatment’ and the biggest breakthrough discovery since insulin was discovered.

However, patients soon started reporting serious Onglyza side effects, including heart failure and pancreatic cancer.

In April 2015 the FDA released a public warning regarding Onglyza heart failure. After consolidating data from the well-publicized SAVOR study consisting of 16,000 patients, experts found that Onglyza patients faced a 27% greater risk of heart failure than the control group.

The FDA launched an investigation into the potential link between Onglyza and heart failure in February 2014 to further evaluate the risk. The results of an Onglyza safety trial prompted several warnings, including the most recent safety alert from the FDA in April 2016.

Recent studies have also suggested a link between pancreatic cancer and Onglyza, after a 2013 study was published in Diabetes medical journal.

Researchers found pancreatic tissue increased in mass in DPP-4 inhibitors, often developing into precancerous stages.

Experts believe that due to the direct interaction between the pancreas and Onglyza, it creates the possibility for pancreatic side effects.

Even though these conditions are highly serious, numerous patients alleged they were not adequately warned against Onglyza side effects.

Can I File an Onglyza Lawsuit?

Onglyza patients who developed heart failure, pancreatic cancer, and other adverse conditions may be eligible to take legal action against AstraZeneca. Potential claimants should contact a specialized lawyer, to determine if they have an Onglyza lawsuit.

In general, Onglyza lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
