Delta-8 THC ‘Diet Weed’ Dangers Overview:
- Who: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
- Why: The CDC and FDA issued a warning to consumers, health officials, and scientists about the dangers of delta-8 THC, a cannabinoid which is not commonly associated with being psychoactive.
- Where: The FDA and CDC’s warning was directed at consumers nationwide.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the federal Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to consumers, health officials, and scientists on Tuesday about the potential dangers of cannabinoid delta-8 THC.
Delta-8 THC products are occasionally marked as “weed light,” or “diet weed,” according to the CDC, which said they are also able to be labeled as CBD or hemp, which may mislead consumers into believing they are not psychoactive.
CBD Converted into Delta-8 THC, Resulting in Intoxicating Effects, Warn Agencies
The CDC says CBD, a cannabinoid which is not psychoactive, is able to be converted into delta-8 THC by using a solvent, acid, and heat.
“Consumers should be aware that products labeled as hemp or CBD may contain delta-8 THC, and that products containing delta-8 THC can result in psychoactive effects,” states the CDC.
Consumers generally associate psychoactive reactions to delta-9 THC, the cannabinoid strain that people associate with getting “high” while smoking cannabis, according to the FDA.
Delta-8 THC, however, is also psychoactive, according to the CDC, which reports it is about 50-75 percent as potent as delta-9 THC.
“Delta-8 THC products are currently being sold in many states, territories, and tribal nations where non-medical adult cannabis use is not permitted by law,” states the CDC.
The FDA says it received reports of 22 consumers who suffered adverse effects from consuming delta-8 THC products between December 2020 and July 2021, with 14 needing to be admitted to a hospital.
Symptoms ranged from vomiting, hallucinations, loss of consciousness, and trouble standing, according to the FDA. Nineteen of the 22 individuals reported the adverse effects after consuming products containing delta-8 THC such as brownies and gummies.
Further, national poison control centers received 660 cases of exposure to delta-8 THC products between January 2018 and July 31, 2021, according to the FDA. Of these cases, 41 percent involved unintentional exposure to delta-8 THC, while 77 percent involved unintentional exposure in pediatric patients under the age of 18.
The FDA said it decided now was the time to warn consumers about delta-8 THC because of an uptick in adverse reactions, an increase in marketing (including some that is appealing to children), and contamination concerns.
Delta-8 THC products have not been evaluated or approved as safe for use in any context, the FDA says.
The FDA is still deciding the fate of Juul Labs, a leader in the e-cigarette market, but has rejected 950,000 new applications for flavored vaping products and taken 55,000 e-cigarettes off the market recently.
