Ford recall has been made due to faulty airbags.

In the latest recall forced by the Takata airbag defect, Ford has been asked to call back more than 150,000 vehicles to make sure they haven’t been installed with 45 banned airbag inflators that can’t be found.

Ford announced Thursday it had discovered certain Takata airbag parts weren’t taken out of service stock since manufacturers became aware the airbags could deploy explosively, injuring or killing car occupants.

Approximately 67 million Takata airbags have been recalled since 2013 due to the risk, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says, and the airbag fault has been tied to 17 deaths and more than 200 injuries in the United States.

In a press release, Ford said it was recalling 154,224 vehicles in the United States, Canada and Mexico, with more than 145,000 of those vehicles believed to be in the United States.

“Ford identified that certain Takata airbag modules were not purged from service stock after the parts for the permanent service fix became available,” the press release stated. “Following extensive investigation and tracing, Ford could not account for some of the obsolete Takata service parts, indicating they may have been installed on vehicles as part of collision or theft repairs.”

In less than 1,200 of the recalls, Ford had been able to use dealer records to identify vehicles that are more likely to have the banned parts. However, the car company was unable to find 45 single-stage airbag inflators that work with 2004-06 Ford Ranger vehicles.

As a result, the NHTSA has asked the car manufacturer to issue a safety recall for all 153,107 of those vehicles.

Ford said it would be notifying owners that they can visit their dealer for an inspection and, if necessary, an airbag inflator replacement.

The car company is also recalling 1,666 of its 2021 Bronco Sport vehicles due to rear suspension modules that may not be properly attached. It said the rear suspension modules with loose or missing bolts could affect vehicle stability, increasing accident risk and potentially reducing rear-impact crash performance.

The models affected by the two recalls include:

  • 2004-11 Ford Ranger
  • 2005-14 Ford Mustang
  • 2006 Ford GT
  • 2008-12 Ford Fusion
  • 2009-11 Mercury Milan
  • 2010-12 Lincoln MKZ
  • 2007-10 Ford Edge
  • 2007-10 Lincoln MKX

The History of the Takata Airbag Defect

The Takata airbag defect is behind the largest auto recall in history.

The problem with the Takata airbags stems from a defect concerning the inflator, which leads the airbag to send metal fragments flying like shrapnel through the vehicle when it explodes.

Affecting over 67 million vehicles made by 19 manufacturers, the faulty airbags have allegedly been linked to hundreds of injuries and at least 26 deaths, according to Reuters and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

There have been a number of class action lawsuits filed against various vehicle manufacturers surrounding allegations regarding the faulty airbags.

Honda agreed to a $96.5 million settlement with 46 states, Washington D.C., and three U.S. territories; the automaker also entered into a $5 million settlement with Arizona. In 2018, Ford agreed to pay out $300 million in a class action lawsuit.

Additionally, Takata reached a $650 million settlement with 44 states and the District of Columbia in 2018 to resolve consumer protection claims.
