TED Foundation Inc. agreed to a $350,000 class action settlement to resolve claims it violated federal privacy law by disclosing account holders’ information to third parties.
The TED settlement benefits TED account holders who watched a pre-recorded video on the TED website or mobile apps between Oct. 19, 2021, and July 14, 2026.
The class action lawsuit claimed TED disclosed users’ personally identifiable information to third-party service providers without users’ informed, written consent in violation of the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA). The VPPA prohibits video tape service providers from disclosing personally identifiable information about users to third parties without the informed, written consent of the consumer.
TED is a platform that allows users to watch and share educational videos on a variety of topics, including TED Talks.
TED has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $350,000 class action settlement to resolve the VPPA class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the TED settlement, class members can receive two free months of TED membership, which is valued at $10.
Class members can also choose to receive a $5 cash payment instead of the membership benefit. Cash payments may be reduced on a pro rata basis depending on the number of claims filed with the settlement.
Class members who choose to receive a cash payment can also choose to donate their payment back to TED Foundation as a charitable donation.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Oct. 26, 2026.
The final approval hearing for the TED class action settlement is scheduled for Nov. 12, 2026.
To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Oct. 26, 2026.
