YouTube TV NFL Sunday Ticket rights overview:

  • Who: Google agreed to pay around $2.2 billion for exclusive residential rights to broadcast the National Football League (NFL)’s Sunday Ticket game package on YouTube TV.
  • Why: DirecTV, which previously held the exclusive rights to broadcast NFL Sunday Ticket, chose not to renew its contract with the league.
  • Where: Football fans nationwide watch the NFL Sunday Ticket game package.

Google agreed to pay around $2.2 billion a year for the next seven years for the exclusive rights to the National Football League’s Sunday Ticket game package, which the tech company will broadcast on its YouTube TV service.

The agreement between Google and the NFL ends the league’s partnership with DirecTV, which held the exclusive NFL Sunday Ticket rights since its creation in 1994, Law360 reports.

Google and the NFL, in a joint statement announcing the deal, say they will work to look for more ways to “support distribution of NFL Sunday Ticket in commercial establishments such as bars and restaurants.”

Google will pay $2 billion in total residential rights, while the additional distribution rights will cost the company around $200 million, Law360 reports.

DirecTV, which, along with the NFL, currently faces antitrust claims, reportedly paid $1.5 billion per year for the exclusive NFL Sunday Ticket rights.

DirecTV says it remains interested in continuing as commercial provider for NFL Sunday Ticket

Despite ending its contract for residential exclusivity, DirecTV says it is still interested in continuing as the commercial provider for the NFL Sunday Ticket game package, Law360 reports.

YouTube TV’s Sunday Ticket Package will reportedly come as an add-on service for subscribers, as well as a standalone feature on YouTube Primetime Channels, according to Google and the NFL.

Google and the NFL have had a relationship officially since 2015, at which time the NFL created its YouTube channel and expanded into digital and streaming services, Law360 reports

Beginning this season, the NFL began broadcasting its Thursday Night Football Games on Amazon Prime.

In related NFL news, a group of NFL website subscribers filed a class action lawsuit against the league in October over claims the league tracked, stored and gave their data to Facebook without consent.

I was subscriber to Youtube TV since about the beginning of 2020. At first the service and the selection of channels were good and reasonable. That’s when I was wrong, it was like all of a sudden channels were dropped and then put on the subscription list. Some of which I purchased and instantly realized I may have been scammed by Youtube TV.
Also they have an option when you cancel your account it’s put on some type of pause. Then they say you can have access to everything saved on the DVR, I couldn’t watch my saved shows during the time I paused my account.
By this time I had to cancel my subscription with Youtube TV, with being charged more to subscribe to channels I once had, not being able to access my DVR content. That was the breaking point to finally cancel for good.
Im sharing my experience as a once subscriber of Youtube TV for anyone already subscribed and anyone thinking about subscribing. Please be diligent and just don’t sign up and waste money. The business practices that Youtube TV did to me was not alright. The happy ending is that Im happy with my current Television provider now and I don’t have to worry about my channels suddenly being dropped only for me to pay extra for them.
