woman getting massage at massage envyA California federal judge says she will likely approve a $10 million settlement that will end claims that Massage Envy raised membership fees without members’ consent and at the same time made it increasingly difficult for customers to cancel their memberships.

The proposed Massage Envy class action settlement would provide $10 million in vouchers worth between $10 and $50.

Under the terms of the Massage Envy class action settlement, if the claims don’t reach $10 million, the amount of the vouchers would increase until the total value of the vouchers reach this figure.

If the Massage Envy class action lawsuit went to trial, the estimated amount that could be recovered is $130 million, so the proposed settlement deal represents around 10 percent of what Class Members could have received had the Massage Envy membership class action lawsuit gone to trial.

A plaintiff in another similar Massage Envy class action lawsuit weighed in unexpectedly on the current case, taking issue with the proposed settlement deal. That plaintiff told U.S. District Judge Maxine Chesney that the vouchers are effectively worthless.

According to that plaintiff, Class Members would possibly have to purchase more services from Massage Envy to make use of the vouchers.

However, the customers and the company, who attended a hearing for the proposed settlement deal, urged Judge Chesney to disregard these concerns and approve the proposed deal.

In this current Massage Envy class action lawsuit, plaintiffs claim that Massage Envy requires customers to prepay for massages, and if they attempt to cancel their membership, they then have to forfeit the massages for which they have already paid.

The Massage Envy class action lawsuit was filed by customers who say that customers pay $60 a month for one 50-minute massage each month. Allegedly, customers were told that they could “lock in” membership rates, and that their monthly rate would not change. Additionally, they were told that they could cancel their memberships.

However, the company allegedly raised the membership rates. Customers say that in some cases, the rate hike was only 99 cents, but in other cases, the membership rates went up by around 30 percent. Additionally, customers claim that the company intentionally makes it hard for customers to cancel memberships.

    I have been trying to cancel my membership for months. the problem is, they will not allow me to cancel over the phone. They just recently emailed a form for me to fill out. I have 7 prepaid sessions stacked up that they want me to use in a 60 day period. They won’t just refund me and leave it at that. I have explained to them that this is not possible for me because I broke my ankle in May, and it hasn’t healed yet. On top of that, they keep telling me to come into their location, and I have repeatedly told them that I am unable to do that as well, because I moved from Texas to Florida in June. Recently, I have been in the process of closing my Tx bank account, and my debit card just expired last month. I haven’t updated my payment info with Massage Envy because I thought I could just keep the sessions I have already paid for, and just not be charged for anymore. Use them until they’re gone, right? WRONG.. They have frozen my account so that I CAN’T USE WHAT I ALREADY PAID FOR, and are threatening to send me to collections for failure to pay, unless I update my payment info and allow them to keep scamming me out of $60 each month. I have had several issues with them over the years as well. Their appointment cancellation use to state that a call with in 3 hrs on the day of was required minimum.. They changed that to 24 hrs prior without notifying me, so when I did call the day of, 3 hrs prior, they told me that I was still going to be charged. However, it is perfectly ok for them to call me and cancel my appointment same day with no warning, and explain to me that they have nothing else available for the loss of MY time and scheduling conflicts. They have also had several therapists quit and come back so many times, that when I thought I was finally getting into a routine, they would call me and say that I had been given to another therapist because mine was no longer with them, and then tell me that my current therapist was already booked. BOTTOM LINE… Their business plan is not designed for the customer AT ALL. This company is criminal and their service is a SCAM. I just want my money back and to be done with them. By typing all of this, I guess I’m asking, “May I join this suit, or is there another suit that I can join?” Please respond ASAP, because they threatened me with collections this morning by email.

    Stop blaming them for your own lack of paying attention. I’ve been a member for years. They told me 2 months before any changes happened and you only need 10 days notice to cancel your account. How is this “making it difficult”? If you pay attention to how you spend your money, you’d have no issue. Money grubbing lawyers.

        Did you have any luck getting out of these?! My husband has been Yell for the past three years and it’s been difficult for me to use them for various reasons. I now have 40! That even includes six months freezes but they still add one every time it’s just been a nightmare. Then with Covid there was just no way. Then my husband was on hospice and sadly passed away in July. I am trying to find a way to not lose all this money which I really really need right now. I hope you were able to get your 20 back somehow.
