KTM and Husqvarna mini electric motorcycles recalled over crash risk

Hundreds of KTM and Husqvarna mini electric motorcycles are being recalled over crash concerns caused by the potential of a short circuit in the bike’s battery if it gets wet.

Two types of electric motorcycles have been recalled over the issue:

  • 2021 model-year KTM SX-E 5 off-road motorcycles
  • 2021 model-year Husqvarna EE-5 mini motorcycles with an electric motor

“The KTM off-road motorcycles are orange with white and blue with the KTM logo on both sides of the shrouds.  The Husqvarna motorcycles are white, blue and yellow with the Husqvarna logo on both sides of the shrouds,” states the recall notice issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Consumers are being warned to hold off on riding the recalled mini motorcycles and contact a dealer for an inspection and free repair if necessary.

Although this is not a class action lawsuit, Top Class Actions will monitor this recall to keep consumers informed.

The recalled motorcycles were sold between June and September of 2020 for between $5,100 and $5,200 each. Products affected by the recall can be identified by their VIN – the VIN, located on the right side of the steering head, will have the letter “M” in the 10th position, says the CPSC notice.

About 300 KTM and Husqvarna mini motorcycles affected by the recall were sold nationwide, reports the Daily Hornet

The issue sparking the recall concerns the battery in certain KTM and Husqvarna mini motorcycles. Water can get into the battery and lead to short circuiting, says CPSC. As of March 11, 2021, no injuries have been reported. Dealers will be inspecting the recalled KTM and Husqvarna mini motorbikes to see if they are at risk of a water leak due to problems with the battery vent valve, notes the Daily Hornet. The recall notice says that the companies will be contacting all known owners directly.

Consumers with questions can contact KTM and Husqvarna Motorcycles North America toll-free at 888-985-6090 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or online at https://www.ktm.com/us/ or  http://www.husqvarna-motorcycles.com

Consumers who have experienced issues with the recalled mini motorcycles are encouraged to report them to CSPC.
