Honda has issued a recall of more than 2.5 million of its vehicles due to a fuel pump defect that can cause the vehicles to not start or to shut down during operation.
The wide range of Honda vehicles involved in the recall are:
- 2017-2020 Honda Accord Hybrid and Acura NSX
- 2018-2019 Honda Clarity PHEV and Fit
- 2018-2020 Honda Accord, Civic Coupe, Civic Sedan, Civic Hatchback, Civic Type R, CR-V, HR-V, Ridgeline and Odyssey
- 2018-2020 Acura ILX, MDX, MDX Hybrid, RDX, RLX and TLX
- 2019-2020 Honda Insight and Passport
- 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid
The fuel pump is molded improperly and left some fuel pumps inoperable, meaning vehicles either don’t start or may stall during operation, the recall says.
If the impeller surface gets exposed to production solvent drying for longer periods of time, the surface may crack and lead to excessive fuel absorption, resulting in impeller deformation, interference with the fuel pump body and then an inoperable fuel pump, the Honda recall says.
Honda defects led to 4,042 warranty claims related to fuel pump issue
Honda says it has not received any reports of injury related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Honda had 4,042 warranty claims as of Dec. 12 related to the defect. Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by mail sent by Feb. 5 and notified to bring the vehicles to a dealership. Dealers were notified of the issue Dec. 19.
Vehicle owners who already paid for repairs can file for reimbursement. Honda can be reached at 888-234-2138.
Honda initiated a number of recalls recently over concerns involving defects related to seat belts, steering racks, connecting rods and pressure washer engines.

still no parts… where’s the reimbursement
Somebody needs to file a class action suit on this. It is now nearly a year and a half since the recall notice went out. Initially we were told parts would be available in August ’24. It is now mid-June ’25 and no one has the parts. I get on the road in fear and trepidation that the vehicle will just stall on the expressway, especially when I am driving my 6 year old grandson. Who has to die before they rectify this issue?
I own a 2018 Clarity PHEV
My 2019 Ridgeline has been on a waiting list for almost a year, it only sputters when going up select steep hills here in town. Is Honda just stalling on this serious recall? Can I have it replaced by an ASE and be reimbersed?
I have a 2019 Honda CRV and all the dashboard lights are on, my car won’t accelerate it stalls and shuts off in mid action. I have been paying for a rental to get to work and my kids to school. My car is finance and I’m paying on a vehicle I can’t drive because the recall also car insurance and it’s just sitting in my drive way. I had problems with the car way before Honda acknowledged the recall. I am completely depleted my funds I don’t know what I am going to do. It’s so much it’s taking a mental toll on me!
I have a 2018 Honda Odyssey that is in the fuel pump recall. Z Honda has not had the part to replace on my van. I have had so many recalls on this van it’s a complete lemon! It was brand new and we were nearly T-boned when it stalled out and the entire transmission had to be replaced. Now the doors won’t close again if the car is on. They are saying there isn’t a current recall for that. How many recalls have been on the doors? Lemon laws are not for consumers.
I have a 2019 honda odyssey.
They sent me a notice in the mail about the recall on my van so when the part came in the honda folks changed out my old fuel pump. The pump stalled out at the airport where I work and blocked traffic. The brakes locked up and I couldn’t move the car. It was toed back to honda for repairs. After it was repaired it was behaving badly and had to be towed for a second time to honda.
A new pump was sent over and so far it’s been one week it is fine, but I’m very nervous about every little glitch it has.
Time will tell on this new pump.
