A type of Freshpet food formulated for small dogs has been recalled in several states because of potential salmonella contamination.
On Sunday, the company announced the recall of a single lot of Freshpet Select Small Dog Bite Size Beef & Egg Recipe Dog Food. The recalled dog food comes in 1 lb bags and has a “sell by” date of October 30, 2021. The product was sold at Publix stores in Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia, and at some Target locations in Arizona, and Southern California, states the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recall notice.
“If pet parents have products matching the following description in their possession, they should stop feeding it to their dogs and dispose of it immediately,” continues the recall notice.
Indeed, salmonella presents a risk to both pets and their owners who handle contaminated dog food. The FDA recommends thorough handwashing after handling pet food or any surfaces exposed to the product.
Symptoms of salmonella poisoning in humans include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. Occasionally, more serious complications can occur, warns the agency, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.
Dogs who have become lethargic or have bloody diarrhea, fever, or vomiting after eating the recalled pet food should be taken to a veterinarian immediately. The FDA also warns that animals exposed to salmonella may not exhibit any symptoms, but can pass the infection on to other animals or humans.
Freshpet says that the company had meant to destroy the recalled dog food, but some packages were “inadvertently shipped” to retailers between June 7 and June 10. The company says that it has not received any reports of illnesses related to the recalled pet food.

OMG! So glad I took my little Chiweenie off of this for good. He was eating this and just last week got sick and I had to take him to the doctors thank God for antibiotics.

Add me please. My dog has 7 teeth and this was easy for him to eat. When I bought the last package at my local Walmart, he ate 1/4 cup of it and refused the rest. He started vomiting within a few hours. He was better within 24 hours. I smelled bag next day and it smelled incosistant with the other bag I purchased. He now refuses to ever eat it again. I’m guessing it was contaminated.

Please add me. I stopped giving my shorkie fresh pet months ago because he vomit and throw up every time. Fresh pet should have recalled this food months ago. I tried adding a bad review to their site. It says submitted but you can’t find the bad reviews. I believe they are blocking or filtering out the reviews.
