  • Who: Bentex, Green Sprouts, Audi, Exela and Weis Markets recalled their respective products this week.

  • Where: The recalls are effective in the United States.

Several popular companies, retailers and manufacturers announced top recalls this week for products that may pose injury to consumers.

Bentex Disney-themed children’s clothing recalled due to excessive lead

On Nov. 23, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website posted a recall for 87,000 Bentex children’s clothing sets in different Disney styles. Bentex initiated the recall after it found the lead levels in the textile ink exceed the federal lead paint ban and the federal lead content ban.

Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health issues; the higher lead levels pose a poisoning risk to children. No injuries or illnesses have been reported, but Bentex encourages consumers to take the product away from children and contact it for instructions on how to return the items for a full refund.

Bentex sold the recalled sets at T.J. Maxx, DD’s/Ross, Burlington, Airforce Exchange Service and other stores nationwide and online at amazon.com from November 2021 through August 2022 for between $5 and $25. The children’s clothing came in nine different Disney styles, including Minnie and Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh.

Green Sprouts stainless steel toddler’s bottles recalled due to lead contamination

Green Sprouts recalled 10,500 of its stainless steel straw bottles, sippy cups and sip-and-straw cups due to a lead poisoning risk to children. The recalled stainless steel bottles’ and cups’ bottom base can break off, exposing a solder dot that contains lead.

Similar to the Bentex recall, Green Sprouts recalled the items due to lead poisoning hazard to children, which can cause adverse health effects if ingested.

The company’s 6- and 8-oz. Green Sprouts stainless steel sippy cups, sip-and-straw cups and straw bottles have tracking numbers 29218V06985, 35719V06985 and 33020V06985. Green Sprouts received seven reports of the bottles’ base breaking off and exposing the solder dot.

Green Sprouts encourages consumers to immediately take the recalled product away from children and contact Green Sprouts for a full refund.

Audi recalls A6, A7 cars due to defective gateway control module

Audi joins our list of top recalls after recalling 50,883 of its A6 and A7 cars due to a defect that can see the engine power cut out unexpectedly. The recall includes the 2019–2022 A6 and A7, the 2020–2022 A6 Allroad S6 and S7 and the 2021–2022 RS6 and RS7.

Audi initiated the recall after it received dozens of reports that the vehicles cut engine power, which resulted from a gateway control module that could shut down. The automaker produced the vehicles without a protective cover over the module located under the rear middle seat.

The problem can occur when people spill liquid in their vehicles’ rear seating area, short circuiting the module and prompting warning messages and reduced power. No injuries have occurred so far, and Audi will notify owners by Jan. 20, 2023, asking them to bring their car to a dealer for a protective cover installation.

Exela expands Sodium Bicarbonate Injection recall to include 14 more lots

In early October, Exela Pharma Sciences voluntarily recalled 49 lots of Sodium Bicarbonate Injection, USP, 8.4%, 50 mEq/50 mL vial, 20-count cartons. The company now expanded the recall to contain 14 more lots, bringing the total number recalled to 63 lots.

Exela initiated the recall after becoming concerned that the glass vials housing the sodium bicarbonate injections could break and shatter when prepared under pressure for administration. The company says it received five reports of flying glass causing injury to skin, eyes and/or other body parts; however, there have been no reports of vial breakage or injury related to the 14 lots now added to the recall.

The Sodium Bicarbonate Injection product is used to treat metabolic acidosis and labeled with Exela and Civica brands. The recalled lots have expiration dates between October 2023 and March 2024, according to the recall.

Exela is notifying customers affected by the recall by both email and certified mail, with the company helping facilitate the return and replacement of the product.

Weis ice cream recalled due to undeclared soy, coconut allergens

The USDA website published a recall notice on Nov. 23 for 108 containers of Weis Quality Sea Salt Caramel Ripple Ice Cream in 48 oz. tubs with a UPC of 041497-01288 and sell-by date of 11/08/23.

Weis initiated the recall after the company found the product may contain undeclared soy and coconut allergens that were not revealed on the packaging, which can cause life-threatening allergic reactions to people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy or coconut allergens.

The recalled ice cream product may have been distributed in 197 Weis Markets’ stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, New York, Delaware and West Virginia. There have been no reported illnesses to date, but consumers are encouraged to return the product for a full refund.
