contigo water bottles recalledThe United States Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that Contigo has recalled its Kids Cleanable Water Bottles because they may pose a choking hazard.

The CPSC notes that the recall was issued because the bottles have a detachable silicone spout, which could loosen and separate from the bottle itself and may end up causing kids to choke.

Contigo issued the recall after the company received 149 reports of the clear silicone spout detaching from the water bottle. Reportedly, they received notice that 18 spouts were found inside of children’s mouths.

5.7 million water bottles were affected in the recall. The recall has received news coverage, from outlets like USA Today and CNN. USA Today notes that happily, there have been no reported injuries associated with the water bottles, though they may pose a potential choking hazard.

The company said that the recall was issued “out of an abundance of caution” to prevent possible injuries from occurring in connection with the water bottles.

The water bottles were imported by Contigo USA of Chicago and were made in China. They were sold at Costco, Walmart, Target, and other stores around the country. The water bottles were also sold online at various websites between April 2018 and June 2019. They were priced between $9 and $24.

Reportedly, they were sold individually, and in packages of two and three.

Because the water bottle can pose a choking hazard, the CPSC advises customs to immediately stop using the water bottles, and to not permit children to access them.

Customers who purchased one of the water bottles included in the recall are eligible for a replacement lid for their water bottles.

The CPSC notes that customers can contact Contigo toll-free at 888-262-0622 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. Customers can also contact Contigo though the company’s website at www.gocontigo.com/recall.

The CPSC stresses that only Contigo Kids Cleanable Water Bottles with black color spout bases and spout cover models are included in this recall. Reportedly, “Contigo” is printed on the rim of the lid, and along the bottom of the bottle, towards the front.

The water bottle comes in a 13 ounce size, a 14 ounce size, and a 20 ounce size, says the CPSC, and is available in four bottle colors — solid color, graphics, stainless steel, and stainless steel in solid colors.

The CPSC recall number for the Contigo Kids Cleanable Water Bottles is 19-186.
