Trader Joe’s has recalled three lots of its white corn tortilla chips after they were found to contain undisclosed milk allergens.
The company voluntarily made a recall on April 13 for 9-ounce bags of “Trader Joe’s Restaurant Style White Corn Tortilla Chips” with sell by dates of August 9, 10 and 11 this year.
Trader Joe’s is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
People who have an allergy or sensitivity to milk may risk a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the chips, states the Food and Drug Administration in the recall notice. Luckily, there have been no reports of illness due to the chips reported so far.
The affected bags were sold in stores in California, Texas, New York, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and the District of Columbia.
Trader Joe’s customers who purchased the chips are being urged not to eat them and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund, states the FDA.
Consumers with questions can contact the company Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm Pacific at 626-363-7711.
Food and dietary products are often subjected to recalls over contamination. Earlier this month, Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals recalled all lots of various dietary supplements over concerns that the products contain allergens not listed on the labels, including milk, eggs, wheat, and soy.
Hi-Tech said in its recall announcement that the discovery of milk, eggs, wheat, and soy in products that were not labeled with the potential allergens prompted an investigation. The investigation revealed an oversight in the label design prior to printing, prompting the recall of the mislabeled products.
Also this month, Washington state creamery Dungeness Valley Creamery recalled gallons of its raw milk after five people were sickened with campylobacter, a bacteria that can cause some nasty symptoms. Campylobacter bacteria can cause serious illness, especially in infants, young children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with a weakened immune system, according to the Washington State Department of Health.
