More than 60,000 trucks recalled over power steering problems.

Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon trucks have reportedly been recalled over concerns that the vehicles may abruptly lose power steering while in motion.

More than 60,000 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks may be equipped with power steering assemblies with faulty electrical connections, according to Consumer Reports. If the wires come loose, the vehicle may become much harder to steer, increasing the risk of a crash.

The problem is more evident at low speeds, such as in parking lots, says Consumer Reports. Drivers may notice warning lights on the instrument panel or even a warning chime if the power steering fails while they are operating the recalled trucks.

A GM spokesperson told Consumer Reports that no injuries nor crashes have been submitted to the company regarding the power steering problem that prompted the recall.

Those who own the recalled Chevy or GM trucks should contact a dealer for a free repair. The dealership will use an updated part to replace a problematic steering gear torque sensor cover assembly

GM will begin notifying recalled truck owners on May 10, 2021. Owners may also reach out to Chevrolet at 800-222-1020, and GMC at 800-462-8782.

Indeed, more than 880 recalls concerning safety issues affecting 55 million vehicles were reported in 2020 alone. Owners and lessees are encouraged to be aware of any recalls affecting their vehicle to avoid serious safety issues, including spontaneous fires, faulty airbags, and other problems.

Consumers can check to see if their vehicle has been recalled on the NHTSA website.

In 2021, Ram truck owners were instructed to park outside after a potential short circuit problem in the heater electrical relay was discovered. The Ram truck recall covered approximately 20,000 2021 heavy-duty diesel trucks that reportedly could go up in flames even when the engine was turned off.

This year, researchers discovered that car and truck recall announcements are timed in certain ways by automakers to avoid negative effects on their stock prices. A study, conducted by investigators from five universities who looked at 48 years of data, concluded that clustering recall announcements allowed automakers to “hide in the herd” and avoid hits to their stock prices.

Mine is a 2015 Z71 and I having the same issues. Yesterday afternoon I turned my truck on and I noticed the interior lights were dim and I thought that’s weird it looks like the battery’s dying so I turned the truck off And then I turned the truck back on and then the interior lights looked fine. I then proceeded to keep driving and then I was I was on freeway, I was doing about 75 hours in the fast lane and all of a sudden the warning system started beeping on the screen said service power steering drive carefully !!! I had no power in the truck !!! I couldn’t control it, and I almost rolled it twice and caused a major accident. Somehow I got it off the freeway but could barely turn the wheel and then that’s when I called OnStar and then they put Chevy on the line, the rep from Chevy told me about the recall and said they wanted taken to a dealership ASAP! So now I’m waiting to hear back from the dealership, but they are already trying to charge $200 out of pocket. I’m mad, scared and upset. I almost died yesterday. This needs to rectified ASAP on their end.

I have taken my GMC truck back to the dealer several times over the last year. One time they said it was the battery, one time they said it was a cable. Never once did they say there was a pending recall. Now I find out GMC has known about this issue for several years. Very poor customer service.

My husband has a 2015 Chevy Colorado. Dealership literally refused to help him. The power steering has gone out on him 3 times. GM said in recall notice that there is no part yet invented to correct issue. What do we do? Pay for a truck that is not driveable? Please call me.

      1. Heather Stacy says:

Kristie, same problem and we lost steering permanently in May of this year. We have reported our accident in Jan. 2021 that was caused due to loss of power steering on a major highway. GMC/Chevy doesn’t care even after stating in their recall alert that this increases a risk of a crash. I will never buy a GMC again after the way this has been handled. We’ve been reporting this since 2017.
