Sad dog with dog food bowlNews of an expanded Hill’s Pet Nutrition recall may cause dog owners to wonder what dog food is killing dogs.

What can make a dog food dangerous?

Many dog foods aim to provide the proper nutritional balance for the pets, but unfortunately, they do not always succeed. This can lead to dogs becoming sick or even dying after eating foods that do not contain nutrients in proper amounts.

Vitamin D is a necessary nutrient for dogs, but in too large quantities, it can be toxic. In some cases, pet owners report that some dog food is killing dogs or sickening them because they contain the wrong nutrients.

In other cases, pet owners worry that poison present in dog foods may pose a risk to pets. These toxic chemicals may accidentally contaminate pet food and cause injury to animals.

What dog food is killing dogs?

In January, Hill’s Pet Nutrition announced that it was recalling several kinds of Prescription Diet and Science Diet canned dog food. Allegedly, these foods contained too much vitamin D, which was causing some dogs to become sick. In severe cases, some customers said their dogs died from eating the affected food.

Unfortunately, the problem has not abated. CBS News reports that Hill’s Pet Nutrition has expanded the recall to 85 total lots of 33 different kinds of canned dog food.

What makes Vitamin D dangerous?

Some vitamins are water soluble, meaning they are dissolved in water and ware absorbed into tissues for immediate use. Very Well Health says that if these vitamins are present in excess in the body, they are excreted in urine. This means that they need to be replenished regularly, and rarely rise to toxic levels. Water soluble vitamins include B vitamins and vitamin C.

In contrast, some vitamins, like vitamin D, are fat soluble. This means that they are not excreted through the urine, and are absorbed by fat globules and distributed through the body in the bloodstream. Because they are stored in the liver and fatty tissues, they can accumulate to toxic levels.

Unfortunately, such was the case for some dogs who ate affected kinds of Prescription Diet and Science Diet canned dog food, according to some customers.

How do I know if my pet’s dog food is affected?

Hill’s Pet Nutrition provides a complete list of the affected canned dog foods on its website.

The company notes that dogs who have consumed too much vitamin D may exhibit symptoms including:

  • vomiting
  • loss of appetite
  • increased thirst
  • increased urination
  • excessive drooling
  • weight loss

In severe cases, too much vitamin D can reportedly lead to renal dysfunction and death.

According to Hill’s Pet Nutrition, the affected dog foods were sold through retail pet stores and veterinary clinics around the country. Reportedly, no dry foods, cat foods, or pet treats were found to have contained too much vitamin D.

My Yorkie ate science diet oral care dry dog food for years and loved it and then he got a new bag and was immediately anorexic, vomiting, diarrhea and was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease. The vet didn’t think that it was the food but a few months later I gave the food to my daughter who has a Yorky also and in less than two weeks he had the very same symptoms I have spent almost $4000 on my Yorkie. He will be on meds and special food the rest of his life I am crushed and science diet will do nothing for me. This began in early March. Is there anyone else out there that has had this issue with the dry food? I even asked them if they would test the food that I have and they won’t do it. They said they have their own batches of food and test rigorously. All I know is my dog was perfectly healthy and so was my daughters dog and now my dog is going to be sick the rest of his life. I’m so very sad.

I feel so bad for you. I have two cats on prescription Hills Science Diet food. Whenever I feed them a new bag of food I hope the food will not make them sick. I don’t think the company is being fair to you. It should at least pay the vet bills for the two dogs and show some compassion. I hope the dogs are getting better. Also, you and your sister!

Our precious dog, Zorro, died in May, 2018. He had been eating Hills Science Diet that was recalled. We had rescued him and had him exactly 5 years to the day we picked up his ashes. We are still
depressed because of his death. He was the love of our lives.

My best friend, trusted loving ? dog Dakota passed away April 23rd 2020, due to Cancer. I am devastated,in shock and lost. Dakota was also my Service Therapy Dog he helped me in every way. He was on the Hills Science Diet for adult dog’s 7 and up both wet and dry food , He ended up at Piper’s Emergency Hospital in Middletown CT stayed 4 days found out he has Cancer. Costed me over $5000.00 dollars to find out this, Cancer! Poor my loving Dakota! The month of March he started to get more lethargic, loss of appetite, loss of weight, diarrhea, vomit. Then April barely ate, I would sit next to him cover him with his blanket and pray.April 23 2020 he passed I love him so!!???

    1. Sharon says:

Michelle, Just read your story. So sorry, tears for the loss of your dear loving dog and prayers for you. Hills has done a terrible job in the quality of dog food. The price of their prescription dog food for sick dogs is severely overpriced and the lack of ingredient quality is outrageous! I do not trust them.

  5. Diane says:

My dogs ate the recalled food, and one dog is deceased

  6. Stacy says:

  7. Lisa Barnes says:

I have lost my baby girl due to this bad dog food.
It broke mine and my husband’s heart because she was exposed to this horrible dog food.
I haven’t heard anything from anyone.
Are they just going to blow this off and forget it?
    They can’t do that.
We spent alot of money on medicne and vet bills for Miss Foxy Lady.
She was our special little baby girl.
We are Devistated because nobody has done anything to help us about this.

    1. Red Garner says:

Was it dry dog food or canned. Because since I have been working less I had to switch to a cheaper brand of dry dog food from dollar general could not afford blue wilderness anymore and 2 days later he died while I was at work it seriously broke my heart because I’ve had him for 13 yrs and I live by myself and he was my only company at home now life seems crappy now without him and bad thing was he was in good health but I noticed he would drink alot more water than he normally did

    2. Kimberly says:

I’m so sorry for your loss and devastation! Our precious baby also died after eating Hills/ SD KD. She went every day for a week for IV flushes to no avail. After terrible suffering we had to put her down. We have heard nothing either and it sickens me that these people are not being held accountable. Take care and sending hugs your way!

  8. Nina Scott says:

I have been giving my baby the dry food and she normally has a ravenous appetite but now she is losing her appetite the past few days. It could be her age and her health but I’m not sure if the food pushed her health downhill faster ? I’m so sad…as someone who has advocated for pet nutrition I have known that Science Diet along with Royal Canine are NOT nutritious food BUT my baby girl is at the beginning stages of Kidney Disease and as for prescription diets they don’t really leave you with healthy options ? I did however find a low protein food Fresh food through Petco that I’m interested in talking to my vet about switching to. It’s even lower protein than the Science Diet K/D Mobility and WAY healthier!!! So I’m definitely up for spending a little more money to save on her healthcare that I believe this food is costing her health anyways!

    1. karina says:

I will also want to know the replacement food brand with lower protein, so I can also try to swich it for my dogs.

  9. Lori Burns says:
