Seresto flea and tick collars market removal overview:

  • Who: A congressional subcommittee recommended that Seresto brand flea and tick collars be removed from the marketplace.
  • Why: The subcommittee determined the Seresto collars pose too much of a danger to animals and humans to remain on the shelves.
  • Where: The collars are sold nationwide.

A congressional subcommittee released a report yesterday recommending Seresto Flea and Tick Collars be removed from the marketplace following a number of injuries and deaths.

The subcommittee held a hearing following the release of the report, during which it discussed what it claimed was the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPAs) failure to regulate the collars.

“Unfortunately, even as the death count rose, the EPA allowed Seresto to remain on the market here without even so much as requiring additional warning labels that regulators mandated in places including Australia, Colombia and the European Union,” Chairman Raja Krishnamoorthi said in an opening statement

The hearing included testimony against Seresto from six witnesses, including two owners of pets who had died, a former EPA scientist and policy analyst and the environmental health science director for the Center for Biological Diversity.

Seresto manufacturer Elanco claims flea and tick collars safe

Jeffrey Simmons, the president and CEO of Seresto manufacturer Elanco, argued in his own testimony that the flea and tick collars are safe and that “no product is without risk.”

“What matters is whether those risks are reasonable in light of the benefits. Numerous studies and the incident report data for Seresto demonstrate the product does not pose an unreasonable risk,” Simmons said during his testimony.

The subcommittee launched the investigation into Seresto’s flea and tick collars back in March of last year after a report by USA Today revealed that a large number of adverse health incidents had occurred that were linked to the collar.

The USA Today report also touched on the EPA’s inaction when it came to policing the collars despite the agency allegedly knowing about the dangers of the product for almost a decade.

Meanwhile, a consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Bayer and Elanco Animal Health last year claiming the companies knowingly sold Seresto brand flea and tick collars that could sicken and kill pets

  4. Karen Hufman says:

Both my dogs died shortly after getting Seresto collars. The cancer they got was directly linked to chemicals in the collar. Vet had said they were very healthy the day he gave them collars. We always gave high quality expensive dog food and took them on long walks every day. The trauma of watching them suffer and die was almost unbearable. Can’t believe our government allows our pets to be poisoned.

  5. Melinda says:

Two of my three dogs died within months of wearing the Seresto flea collar. If I did not take my third dog to the vet for his neck being irritated I would of never known that that’s what killed my other two dogs. I can not believe that they continue to allow these monsters to sell this stuff like its safe.
