A person hands a bowl of kibble dog food to a golden retriever - blue buffalo

UPDATE:

  • The Court approved this settlement Aug. 4, 2021.

A judge has certified a class action lawsuit accusing Blue Buffalo of falsely advertising the content of its pet food products.

Superior Court Judge Calum MacLeod certified the Class on April 15, 2021.

The certification establishes a nationwide Class of purchasers of the Blue Buffalo products before September 2019. This applies only to the complaints of false advertising, not to complaints of the content of the products actually causing harm to pets.

The class action lawsuit, filed in February 2016, argued that Blue Buffalo’s labelling, advertising, and promotion of its pet food as a healthy alternative to other brands were false and misleading.

The lead plaintiff claims Blue Buffalo’s “True Blue Promise” that the products contain no poultry byproduct meal, corn, wheat, soy, or artificial preservatives, colors, or flavors has no scientific basis.

In fact, the class action lawsuit states, the Blue Buffalo products actually contain “substantial amounts” of poultry by-product meal, as well as corn, rice, grains, artificial preservatives, and other ingredients that contradict the company’s “True Blue Promise.”

Nearly 4,000 Class Members already have registered with Class counsel, Judge MacLeod wrote.

If the settlement is approved, Class Members will be able to object to the settlement or to opt out of it, according to Judge MacLeod’s endorsement.

These Class Members will be entitled to “modest payments… without the need to submit a claim form or proof of purchase,” according to the endorsement.

A notice is expected to go out by April 30, 2021.

A hearing to approve the Blue Buffalo false advertising settlement is scheduled for July 29, 2021.

Ten years ago I was told Blue Buffalo was the best dog food to feed my dog. I had been feeding my dog Blue Buffalo Chicken (gluten and grain free) as I was told to purchase. A little over a year ago I was told my dog had elevated liver levels. After mentioning to the vet what I was feeding my dog, they told me to switch the dog food immediately. My dog is now on kidney diet food from Hills Science Diet and liver supplements to keep his liver levels manageable. As anyone knows, prescription food and prescription supplements are not cheap.

We have 3 sweet fur babies and have been feeding them Blue Buffalo for the past few years.
Itching and scratching has increased with licking and biting paws.
Their barking has become excessive with increased anxiety, two of them vomit frequently and one has decreased energy level. Stools range from hard to soft.

If you have the time please switch to making your own dog food. I’m happy to share a great recipe if you’ll email me at ljinphx@gmail.com. If you have a pressure cooker it’s a process that only takes a couple of hours & makes enough food to last a week or more (depending on size & numbers of fur babies). All of our dogs anxiety, digestive issues & allergy issues have gone away completely since we started them on homemade dog food.

I have been feeding Blue Buffalo dog food to my dogs for 10 yrs now, since they were pups. One dog has cancer and the other severe digestion issues. The cat who was also on BB cat food died in nov 2021 from kidney failure.
So sad to find that this food that i thought was a wise choice from its labeling and marketing was not what it was stated to be.

Add us as well. My dog Daisy, has developed an enlarged heart and diabetes since eating blue bufflao. Now she must be on these meds for the rest of her life. One injection of 14 units of insulin twice daily. We have already accrued a nearly 600 dollar vet bill. Now she has to basically go back every 7 days to get checked on her blood sugar.

    1. Sherry Newcomb says:

Add in she is on a heart medicine at 1/2 tablet twice daily as well.

    2. Trina Gunnarson says:

I’ve been feeding my dog blue since she was a puppy, I stopped after a year and a half for about 2 years then started up again. I’ve noticed she just lays around and doesn’t want to play like she use to and her joints aren’t as good. I have a bag still and don’t have money to replace it so now I feed her a raw diet to hopefully her her. I’m on a fixed income and don’t know what to do?
