A person hands a bowl of kibble dog food to a golden retriever - blue buffalo

UPDATE:

  • The Court approved this settlement Aug. 4, 2021.

A judge has certified a class action lawsuit accusing Blue Buffalo of falsely advertising the content of its pet food products.

Superior Court Judge Calum MacLeod certified the Class on April 15, 2021.

The certification establishes a nationwide Class of purchasers of the Blue Buffalo products before September 2019. This applies only to the complaints of false advertising, not to complaints of the content of the products actually causing harm to pets.

The class action lawsuit, filed in February 2016, argued that Blue Buffalo’s labelling, advertising, and promotion of its pet food as a healthy alternative to other brands were false and misleading.

The lead plaintiff claims Blue Buffalo’s “True Blue Promise” that the products contain no poultry byproduct meal, corn, wheat, soy, or artificial preservatives, colors, or flavors has no scientific basis.

In fact, the class action lawsuit states, the Blue Buffalo products actually contain “substantial amounts” of poultry by-product meal, as well as corn, rice, grains, artificial preservatives, and other ingredients that contradict the company’s “True Blue Promise.”

Nearly 4,000 Class Members already have registered with Class counsel, Judge MacLeod wrote.

If the settlement is approved, Class Members will be able to object to the settlement or to opt out of it, according to Judge MacLeod’s endorsement.

These Class Members will be entitled to “modest payments… without the need to submit a claim form or proof of purchase,” according to the endorsement.

A notice is expected to go out by April 30, 2021.

A hearing to approve the Blue Buffalo false advertising settlement is scheduled for July 29, 2021.

I bought blue for years and have lost so many dogs from cancer. How come I’m just finding out? Had my ne kep having seizures. So disappointed in blue and I told people what a great food it was.

  2. Ralph Blais says:

We have been feeding our dogs Blue Buffalo since 2011, at one time we had 6 dogs and of course they ate out of their own dishes. Our yellow lab was 12 years old when she lost body control, fell down the stairs and died of a cancerous ruptured spleen. One of our 2 pugs stopped eating all together, lost a lot of weight and started using the house as her toilet. She had to be euthanized. The other pug had a neurological condition where she would just stop in her tracks and have seizures. She eventually died when she had her final seizure and into our swimming pool while a good friend was looking after our house . Finally, our small 5 pound long haired chihuahua Pippin died in my arms October 20th from heart failure at the age of 10 years old. Speaking with our Vet today, after she performed dental work on our 2 chihuahuas, she mentioned that Blue Buffalo had misled its customers about the contents of their products and to stop feeding it to our dogs immediately. I had no idea of this lawsuit until today, and I’m not sure that this dog food had anything to do with any of their deaths but reading the stories above it I still doubt that it may have been a contributing factor.

I thought Blue Buffalo was a good dog food for my dogs I noticed that these last couple of batches that I’ve been getting my dogs are getting warts on them and just last week May the 10th one of my dogs died they got sick after 8 days of eating this stuff. I have been purchasing this now for about a year thinking it’s the best food for my dog. I just could not understand how a healthy dog will go down after 8 days of eating this dog food. I noticed when the dog food arrive and I gave her some she wasn’t as anxious to have more. But I left it out because I’m thinking this is the best food for her with the probiotic. But after my dogs began to shy away from the food I thought it was because I was cooking for them days beforethefoodarrived. . But my dog would not eat she began to get sick and I could not understand it she went fast. I had my baby cremated May the 11th 2023 she died May 10th 2023 and I pick her up from cremation today May the 15th 2023. Her name is Angelina O’Kelly Luna my baby. I had 5 dogs now I have 4.

My dog was fed blue Buffalo exclusively since we brought him home. Very limited treats ontop of this, and usually low calorie ones at that. He developed pancreatitis at the age of 2 and we were shocked. Had to stop Blue Buffalo immediately as advised by the animal hospital and switch him to low calorie food.

  6. Alyson Norris says:

I have been feeding all of my dogs Blue Buffalo for as long as I can remember. One of my dogs, Teddy, suddenly developed diabetes, became blind, and eventually passed away. My other baby, Lilly has been eating Blue Buffalo since she was 2; she is now 5 and she was diagnosed with diabetes. The only common factor is Blue Buffalo food; it was all I fed to Teddy and I only now just switched foods for Lilly. Please add me.

  7. Tammy cerdena says:

I’ve fed my dogs Blue Buffalo for years. And my dog suddenly recently passed away with cancer. And my other dog went blind suddenly. And my biggest dog has terrible skin and itching. I have to wonder if this food contributed

  8. LJ Pelham says:

I am shocked to be just finding out about Blue Buffalo. We adopted a Greyhound (Thor) in 2008-2009, he was our baby. We were told Blue Buffalo was the best and because Greyhounds are notorious for stomach issues we only fed Thor Blue Buffalo. Thor passed away very suddenly & unexpectedly) from cancer in 2016 (confirmed by autopsy). I thought we were doing the best for Thor so to now find about about this case I’m sick, I wonder now if this terrible food contributed to Thors cancer. How can companies get away with this? Blue was always expensive compared to other brands but we trusted them. I am disgusted!! Thank God a few years ago my husband and I started making our remaining dogs homemade dog food. Our remaining two digs are happy, energetic, healthy and thriving. I wish were knew years earlier what we know now, maybe our baby Thor could have been with us a few more years.
