A person hands a bowl of kibble dog food to a golden retriever - blue buffalo

UPDATE:

  • The Court approved this settlement Aug. 4, 2021.

A judge has certified a class action lawsuit accusing Blue Buffalo of falsely advertising the content of its pet food products.

Superior Court Judge Calum MacLeod certified the Class on April 15, 2021.

The certification establishes a nationwide Class of purchasers of the Blue Buffalo products before September 2019. This applies only to the complaints of false advertising, not to complaints of the content of the products actually causing harm to pets.

The class action lawsuit, filed in February 2016, argued that Blue Buffalo’s labelling, advertising, and promotion of its pet food as a healthy alternative to other brands were false and misleading.

The lead plaintiff claims Blue Buffalo’s “True Blue Promise” that the products contain no poultry byproduct meal, corn, wheat, soy, or artificial preservatives, colors, or flavors has no scientific basis.

In fact, the class action lawsuit states, the Blue Buffalo products actually contain “substantial amounts” of poultry by-product meal, as well as corn, rice, grains, artificial preservatives, and other ingredients that contradict the company’s “True Blue Promise.”

Nearly 4,000 Class Members already have registered with Class counsel, Judge MacLeod wrote.

If the settlement is approved, Class Members will be able to object to the settlement or to opt out of it, according to Judge MacLeod’s endorsement.

These Class Members will be entitled to “modest payments… without the need to submit a claim form or proof of purchase,” according to the endorsement.

A notice is expected to go out by April 30, 2021.

A hearing to approve the Blue Buffalo false advertising settlement is scheduled for July 29, 2021.

Two of my cats have strictly been fed Blue Buffalo dry cat food and some Blue Buffalo canned cat food for about 4-5 years now. My third cat has never been fed Blue Buffalo and that cat is doing fine. The two cats that have been on the Blue Buffalo developed gastrointestinal issues and had to be put on steroidal medication due to either having developed inflammatory bowel disease or gastrointestinal lymphoma with symptoms of chronic nausea and vomiting and diarrhea. One of my two cats on this diet just passed away a week ago due to cancer of the stomach according to X-rays. I’m reading this now and will stop feeding the other cat the Blue Buffalo cat food.

My dogs have been on this food for 4 & 6 years and I am just finding out about this now. Add me please

My cat of 14 years had excellent health. I switched her to Blue Buffalo cat food thinking I was making a healthier choice for her. He bowel movements started to smell, and then became bloodied. She started breathing heavy and sleeping most of the day. Then she stopped eating.

I took her to the vet. They ran a bunch of tests and could not find a reason why she was suddenly sick. They did discover a heart murmur, something she did not have before.

I took her off Blue Buffalo. For 8 weeks I had to give her homemade food to get her eating again (baby food, then boiled chicken). The foul smell in her bowel movements went away, her energy returned and she now lives happily eating Acana cat food. However, she now has a cough due to congestive heart failure I am certain was caused by the food.

Blue Buffalo almost killed my cat, and has certainly shortened the life of my pet. Soon, I will have to take on the expense of heart medication for her. I am happy to submit my cats medical records if it helps bring this horrible company down.

I am horrified my American Staffordshire Charger has been eating Blue Buffalo for over 6 months now. His hair has all fallen out around his chest and behind his ears. His paws are swollen all the time. I belived in Blue Buffalo now I am disgusted! My poor Charger is 11 years old I fear I have done damage to him and he won’t recover I can’t afford to take him to the vet. I live on n a fixed income. I a strong man but I am crying right now for my best friend is suffering. I want to hurt these people that are doing this. What has become of our great Nation such deceit and greed.

My dog was on Blue Buffalo adult lamb and rice and when we bought a new bag of it there had to be something wrong with it because he became immediately finicky and not wanting to eat it with exception a little and spit some out even . After max of 2 weeks his liver enzymes where elevated……. Long story short he ended up with liver failure and died. He was only 2.5 years old and my best friend. Blue Buffalo when I filed a claim even after all the vet reports claimed it wasn’t from the food. I would never recommend this food to anyone for their pets. My dog and best friends life was robbed from him!
Something was wrong with that bag of food !

I adopted a perfectly healthy barn cat that was about two years old living up at our barn. After one year of feeding him (a small scoop a day) Blue Buffalo, he now has skin allergies, is twice the size he should be, and his hair is falling out. He lives in the house and goes outside once a day. He has no other contact with outside cats. I am paying a fortune for this Blue Buffalo and it is killing my Henley.

Is this only for Canadians ?

  10. Deedra Daniels says:

I have been buying Blue Buffalo for my dog for a little over 3 years. Thinking it was the very best. I bet anything that’s why she has allergies and scratches all the time.
