A woman shared a video of her shattered shower door on the social media site TikTok this week, saying it unexpectedly exploded on her while in use.

The woman, who posted the video on her TikTok page Kai’s World, says that the incident caused lacerations that required stitches. Hundreds of thousands have viewed the video, but the problem of shower doors exploding unexpectedly is not new.

Just weeks earlier, a North Carolina couple reported that their shower door exploded without warning.

The couple told local reporters at 7 News that they heard a “boom” while at their home on a Saturday night in late April. They say they found glass in the bathroom as well as the bedroom from the unexpected explosion.

“Thank God we didn’t have anybody in the bathroom when it happened,” homeowner Kathy Loftin told reporters. “When I researched it I said, ‘hey, we’re not an anomaly.’ This has happened before and people don’t know it.”

Indeed, approximately 500 people suffer injuries from shattering shower doors that send them to the hospital emergency rooms each year, according to US consumer protection agencies. Exploding shower doors also still happen despite a 2016 safety alert issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) which required changes to how tempered glass products were made.

Other glass products have been known to spontaneously shatter as well, from Pyrex dishes to car windshields. Top Class Actions has covered consumer lawsuits that claim defective glass products shattered unexpectedly, causing injuries and property damage. Glass shower doors that may explode unexpectedly are a potentially serious safety risk, and Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this story for consumers.

Another woman was injured by an exploding shower door in 2018. The woman, a yoga instructor, said that she was exiting a hotel shower when it unexpectedly shattered behind her. She told the New York Post that she was taken to the emergency room where it took hours to remove pieces of glass from her body and for her to receive 30 stitches.

Experts say there are a number of reasons why glass shower doors may explode unexpectedly, from temperature variations to problems with how they were made or installed. The Spruce recommends that homeowners with a glass shower door routinely inspect it for cracks or other problems.

We heard a loud crash and ran to look. We found the Maxx brand shower door completely shattered and glass everywhere. Maxx did send us a free door replacement, but now the new door is starting to slip and is super hard to open and close. We are terrified it will shatter again. We cannot afford to replace the whole shower with another one so will probably have to use a stupid shower curtain in place of the door.

Our shower glass exploded at 3:30 a.m. this morning. Luckily, nobody was in the shower at the time. Another hour and it would have been me! It sounded horrible. I couldn’t believe something like that could happen. A year and a half ago we had new glass put in. We have had the company that installed the glass out several times to replace the hinge, the glass door was pulling away from the wall, the handle. When they installed the shower glass, in taking out the old glass they cracked our tub. It has been a nightmare. We weren’t planning on ever using or recommending this company again. Now, we have to call and tell them this latest news. It could have hurt us, our grandkids, our small dog.

12July2022: Our daughter was getting out of the shower when the glass shower door exploded. All we heard was her screaming. We had to take her to the ER to be treated for small lacerations and 2 deep cuts that required stitches.

Our Delta Shower door exploded yesterday, what a mess. Thank goodness we were not near the shower. Heard a big explosion. Millions of pieces of glass all over. How can this happen? Are the manufacturer responsible for this?

  7. Jeri Covington says:

When I purchased my house, it had an enclosed tub with sliding Delta glass doors. One day, my son went to slide the door to take a shower, and both upon touch exploded causing glass to fly everywhere. Fortunately, my son had not yet undressed and still had on his shoes so he was not cut, but the experience rattled him for a while.

My 11 year old’s shower door exploded while he was coming out of it (5/11/2022). He had cuts all over his arms and legs. ER visit and a few stitches later, now we are extremely terrified of shower and glass doors. A very traumatic experience to see your child bleeding all over his body standing in pile of broken glass.

  10. Donna Bowerman says:

    In May 2022,
a shower glass door exploded on me like a hand grenade was wired throughout the door. I had lacerations on both hands. The large pieces of glass severed three tendons and nerves in my right hand – spent 8 days in the hospital and require more surgeries to
    receive mobility.
