A woman shared a video of her shattered shower door on the social media site TikTok this week, saying it unexpectedly exploded on her while in use.

The woman, who posted the video on her TikTok page Kai’s World, says that the incident caused lacerations that required stitches. Hundreds of thousands have viewed the video, but the problem of shower doors exploding unexpectedly is not new.

Just weeks earlier, a North Carolina couple reported that their shower door exploded without warning.

The couple told local reporters at 7 News that they heard a “boom” while at their home on a Saturday night in late April. They say they found glass in the bathroom as well as the bedroom from the unexpected explosion.

“Thank God we didn’t have anybody in the bathroom when it happened,” homeowner Kathy Loftin told reporters. “When I researched it I said, ‘hey, we’re not an anomaly.’ This has happened before and people don’t know it.”

Indeed, approximately 500 people suffer injuries from shattering shower doors that send them to the hospital emergency rooms each year, according to US consumer protection agencies. Exploding shower doors also still happen despite a 2016 safety alert issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) which required changes to how tempered glass products were made.

Other glass products have been known to spontaneously shatter as well, from Pyrex dishes to car windshields. Top Class Actions has covered consumer lawsuits that claim defective glass products shattered unexpectedly, causing injuries and property damage. Glass shower doors that may explode unexpectedly are a potentially serious safety risk, and Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this story for consumers.

Another woman was injured by an exploding shower door in 2018. The woman, a yoga instructor, said that she was exiting a hotel shower when it unexpectedly shattered behind her. She told the New York Post that she was taken to the emergency room where it took hours to remove pieces of glass from her body and for her to receive 30 stitches.

Experts say there are a number of reasons why glass shower doors may explode unexpectedly, from temperature variations to problems with how they were made or installed. The Spruce recommends that homeowners with a glass shower door routinely inspect it for cracks or other problems.

This just happened to my 18 year old daughter at a hotel in Vancouver Canada. Door was locked, she was in the middle of fainting but just made it to open the lock. Glass had impaled her whole body, her legs mostly and a gaping wound on the top of her foot. Fortunately there was a medic with full gear in the hotel who attended her for a couple of hours and pulled out all of the glass and closed her wounds. How fast the blood was pouring out of her foot was horrific. She is now terrified of glass showers. A simple plastic film would have prevented it from exploding.

I would not have bought a Delta shower door if I had known about how dangerous this stuff is.

It exploded on me today 3/27/2022. I have the pics showing the aftermath. I was holding it at the time, very lucky I escaped with minor cuts on hands/feet only!

I trusted the Delta name. My shower door severed three tendons and nerves,
Was hospitalized for eight days and no longer have full use of my right hand….😢

Our Delta glass shower door randomly shattered in huge shards of glass on my son’s hand in November 2020. It lacerated three tendons requiring hand surgery as it was cut to the bone and months of physical therapy, permanent scarring, and fear of large pieces of glass. Major defect as the tempered glass did not break up into tiny pieces at all!

My Delta Shower door shattered while I was showering on 3-13. I had to be taken to the emergency room for stitches.

My shower door exploded today – 3-14-22. My kids and I were in the living room and heard a loud crash. We went looking for what the noise was and turned the corner into my bathroom to find the shower door just a pile of rubble in the floor. The glass blew with such force that it chipped our tile floor in a couple spots and damaged our cabinets in places. Thank god no one was hurt.

12/25/21- Christmas night…, our sons shower door exploded … very scary and a mess. Home Depot delta doors purchased October last year.

  7. William Tran says:

My new shower door was installed 4 weeks ago and just exploded while my son was in the shower. He had cuts all over his body, hands and feet. Add me to this lawsuit

My Delta shower door just exploded tonight too. Very scary! I got home from work and it was everywhere. I couldn’t believe it!

  9. Stacy Smith says:

Sadly our door just exploded. We heard a loud noise and ran upstairs to find glass everywhere. Never in all my years have I heard of such a thing. While googling causes I came across this lawsuit. This could have injured us very badly. Thank God we weren’t in our bathroom when it happened. The mess is unreal. This could have injured my children and animals greatly. I am so appreciative we are safe. But the expense to fix this and clean up is ridiculous. Glass is going down our drain while we try to clean all of it up. Please include me in this lawsuit. This is very dangerous.

Our shower door 923233 sedan just exploded today at 6am in the morning with only 2 months installed it sound like a bomb

  10. Johnson Yohannan says:

My Delta shower door just exploded in my hand as I was installing it. The glass panel had not touched or hit any other objects before it exploded as I was holding. It gave a number of lacerations on my hand and also on my nephew’s legs who was helping me to install it. I spent over $425 for the product. Does anyone know how to get the money back for this loss.
