A woman shared a video of her shattered shower door on the social media site TikTok this week, saying it unexpectedly exploded on her while in use.

The woman, who posted the video on her TikTok page Kai’s World, says that the incident caused lacerations that required stitches. Hundreds of thousands have viewed the video, but the problem of shower doors exploding unexpectedly is not new.

Just weeks earlier, a North Carolina couple reported that their shower door exploded without warning.

The couple told local reporters at 7 News that they heard a “boom” while at their home on a Saturday night in late April. They say they found glass in the bathroom as well as the bedroom from the unexpected explosion.

“Thank God we didn’t have anybody in the bathroom when it happened,” homeowner Kathy Loftin told reporters. “When I researched it I said, ‘hey, we’re not an anomaly.’ This has happened before and people don’t know it.”

Indeed, approximately 500 people suffer injuries from shattering shower doors that send them to the hospital emergency rooms each year, according to US consumer protection agencies. Exploding shower doors also still happen despite a 2016 safety alert issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) which required changes to how tempered glass products were made.

Other glass products have been known to spontaneously shatter as well, from Pyrex dishes to car windshields. Top Class Actions has covered consumer lawsuits that claim defective glass products shattered unexpectedly, causing injuries and property damage. Glass shower doors that may explode unexpectedly are a potentially serious safety risk, and Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this story for consumers.

Another woman was injured by an exploding shower door in 2018. The woman, a yoga instructor, said that she was exiting a hotel shower when it unexpectedly shattered behind her. She told the New York Post that she was taken to the emergency room where it took hours to remove pieces of glass from her body and for her to receive 30 stitches.

Experts say there are a number of reasons why glass shower doors may explode unexpectedly, from temperature variations to problems with how they were made or installed. The Spruce recommends that homeowners with a glass shower door routinely inspect it for cracks or other problems.

It happened to us night before last in our upstairs master bedroom’s bathroom. The explosion was so loud we thought a tree had fallen on the roof. The glass blew with such force it sent shards 8 feet from the source.

It happened to me on September 30th 2021 . I was just taking a shower and there was a loud explosion that went boom. The glass door shattered and the glass flew cutting my right arm leaving a gash and a big bruise. The shower steel handle hit my arm. I had to tip toe out of the shower due to all the glass and ended up cutting my foot. The bleeding did not stop so I went the the local emergency room. It was like being in a shotgun blast of glass I had cuts all down my right I had butterfly stitches and i left the hospital still hurting with a golf ball size bruise.

In January our shower door exploded. My husband was in the bathroom and was hit by a large piece of glass that did not break apart. It sounded like an explosion.

We have reached out to the company where we bought the shower doors, and they have sent a claim to the manufacturer, Maax. We are still waiting to hear from them.
