Plaintiff Joseph Izzo filed a class action lawsuit against Procter & Gamble, claiming its Cascade ActionPac products are known to explode and shoot highly concentrated chemical cleaning agents into the air.
The detergent causes risk to skin or eyes, the lawsuit claims. The risk is known and yet Procter & Gamble has not corrected the issue, according to the suit.
Izzo claims he attempted to use the dishwasher detergent pacs Jan. 15 when a pac exploded and shot into his eye. He attempted to rinse his eye with water for 10 minutes, as the detergent pac package stated, but it did not help.
He then went to the hospital and was there for roughly five hours as his eye was treated. Izzo was sent to the Storm Eye Institute at the Medical University of South Carolina, where he was diagnosed with chemical burns to his eye caused by the cleaning chemicals, according to the Cascade ActionPac lawsuit.
“Plaintiff seeks to recover damages because the products are adulterated, defective, worthless and unfit for human use due to the risk of explosion,” the class action claims. “This explosion releases harmful chemicals into the air and onto the surrounding surfaces which greatly increases the risk of contact with skin and/or eyes.”
Procter & Gamble at fault for product, class action claims
Procter & Gamble received unjust enrichment and, because other companies have pacs that do not explode, is responsible for creating a product that creates risk for consumers, according to the Cascade ActionPac lawsuit.
The plaintiffs seek an injunction in the Procter & Gamble class action along with damages, costs and attorneys’ fees.
In 2019, Palmolive faced a class action lawsuit claiming its Palmolive Pure + Clear liquid dish soap contained harsh chemicals, despite advertising to the contrary. The parties settled later that year.

When it exploded it was on my face and actually went into my mouth and i was literally choking it was like in my throat, and my lungs, I couldn’t stop coughing, the right side of my throat hurt like a bad soar throat and for a couple of days I could still taste it. I still remember the disgusting taste
I have used cascade packs for a few years. Three instances of exploding packs. Severe irritation to the skin required prescription creams and Antibiotics to avoid infection. The healing process took about 3 weeks the first time.
The second incident was a near miss. My teenage granddaughter had one explode on the counter barely missing her as she had set the of on the counter and turned away to finish loading the dishes into the dishwasher. The chemicals sprayed a good portion of the kitchen and took nearly 2 hours time to ensure we found all of it and got it cleaned up.
The third incident was my spouse, it exploded in his hand unexpectedly. He suffered chemical burns on his hand. Arm, neck and face.
