LGI Homes’ Shoddy Buildings Left Homeowners With Huge Bills, Proposed Class Action Claims

A “vanilla storm” turned into a nightmare for Washington homeowners when shoddy construction resulted in snow and rain falling inside homes as siding flew around the neighborhood, a proposed class action lawsuit alleges.

The class action lawsuit will be filed in the next 21 days by Casey Law on behalf of homeowners in Suntop Farms in Enumclaw, Washington, KIRO 7 reported.

LGI Homes violated the Consumer Protection Act, the lawsuit alleges, building poor-quality houses throughout the neighborhood. Casey Law notified LGI Homes of the lawsuit on Friday, April 9.

The class action follows a February storm where brand-new LGI Homes suffered serious damage, KIRO 7 reported. At least 24 houses built by LGI Homes had sliding and shingles ripped off by 51.4 miles per hour winds, despite being designed to withstand gusts of at least 150 miles per hour, according to an inspector hired by Casey Law.

Snow and rain was also able to enter some homes due the damage, leaving homeowners facing leaks and water damage. One homeowner told KIRO 7 the situation was frustrating.

“We (have a) brand-new baby just born two weeks ago. My wife, my mother, my teenage daughter is there. It’s very heartbreaking to know my family is not in a house that’s safe.”

Many of the new houses damaged in the storm are still under warranty, but attorney Chris Casey, who is representing the homeowners, said that LGI Homes claimed the storm was an act of God and was refusing to remedy the situation.

“If it happened on one or two homes, that’s a bad day. But it happened on 24 homes. That’s more than a bad day. That’s clearly cutting corners,” he told KIRO 7.

Casey said that 40 people had signed up to be part of the class-action lawsuit, but expected many more homeowners to join as more building defects were discovered. Casey Law attorneys expected that all 288 homes in the neighborhood could face building defects.

Inspector William Martin was hired by the law firm to look into LGI Homes’ construction practices, and he said that of the 10 homes he had reviewed, all suffered from improper installations. The repairs are estimated to cost $140,000-$160,000 per home, according to KIRO 7.

Lawsuits over shoddy building materials aren’t new. In July 2020, the homeowners’ association at Martinique at the Oasis in Florida filed a lawsuit against Lennar Homes in the Miami-Dade Circuit Court, alleging shoddy construction in the South Florida community, according to Law.com. Attorneys for the community said these defects posed a danger to residents.

And in late-2019, a New Hampshire homeowner filed a class action lawsuit, claiming that the WindsorONE trim installed on his house is poorly made and prone to rotting. Lead Plaintiff Brian Begley said that the siding manufactured by the defendant knowingly used unsuitable, untreated wood for the product, while misrepresenting their siding in marketing and advertising materials.

Purchased house in September 2017 from LGI, in Texas City. In October 2018, we had ceiling damage from rain water coming in from the roof vents that were not properly sealed by LGI. We were told by LGI that they were not going to cover any of the damage because it was just after the year warranty.

Not to mention they also never installed the rain guard over our rear patio door, which we didn’t notice at the time because houses around us were still being built.

I forgot that they never came back to do the one year inspection either.

Hello. I bought an lgi house in August last year that was built in 2017 and it’s terrible. Issues with sagging roof, leaky toilets that ruin the flooring, siding outside not sealed, crooked door frames and baseboards, terrible paint issues, shoddy garage door control install, exterior doors not hung properly without seals, terrible weak and crooked fences, having to spend hundreds to have electriciancome replace fuses because they left the builders fuses that are supposedto be replaced and they flip with any large use like a vacuum cleaner, lights flicker during normal use … the list goes on.
The other owners in in contact with on the neighborhood Facebook page are all in agreement with the same types of issues, and I have seen comments where people have mentioned being interested in a class action suit. We are in Howe Texas.

I purchased an LGI home as well in the Houston area, and my siding is bad, floor is cracked in restrooms, my doors are not closing correctly due the space at the bottom of floor panel. I have called and I get the runaround, or they call and then hang up so I call back and they do not answer, or I text the number and they do not respond. This is so unfair to us homeowners.

There are so many issues wrong with my LGI home in Texas City, Texas. The first Saturday on move in, the bathroom tile broke and flooded a bedroom and Mr garage. I have had constant cooling issues with the 2 front small bedrooms. An AC company came out yesterday and told me LGI cut corners, used ducting to cool a 75sf room, when mine were 105sf, then wrote an estimate for $1,400 — he said they are getting calls from many homes in the area. Not sure about why I seem to have so much lint inside my house but within a week, it is very noticeable. The garages have no venting and no extra insulation for the bedroom wall. I was told that the water treatment plant behind me would be moved. It will not. It runs 24/7 right at the primary bedroom window. Every once in a while they burn off something on the middle of the night, it’s so bright it lights up the night. I took pictures, sent it to LGI. No response. LGI does nothing.

Bought our home from LGI in Texas City, TX and we have had same issues with A/C unit has stopped working 3 times there is mold and kitchen wiring it all messed up.

We purchased our LGI home in January 2018 in Texas City, TX. It’s been nothing but problems such as roof leaks, AC gone out twice already, Mold growing inside our bathroom and one of the bedrooms from the AC condensation in the attic. They have twice had to come out, tear out all the sheetrock, seal the boards, replace the insulation, replace sheetrock and repaint. Also the ceiling in the utility room is leaking and they would not fix it. I’m now seeing mold around the AC vents too. Terribly disappointed in LGI. And nots all the issues, just some of the main ones. I could go on…..

I purchased an lgi home in texas city in August 2018. Have had shingles blow off in light winds, electrical issues and bad flooring that has had to be worked on 5 times.

    1. Will says:

And I forgot about the ac going out twice. Installer would not honor the warranty.

  7. Cassandra Fricks says:

I bought in Tucson, AZ (Cantera Community) in February 2020 and it’s been issue after issue. Been in my home for 1 1/2 and the A/C has gone out twice. My A/C condensing unit has been sitting in 2 to 4 inches of water off and on throughout this season and they were out 3 times. First told me there was no issue with it sitting in 2 to 4 inches of water, then told me I needed to add landscaping. So I did and had it graded since LGI couldn’t seem to do it. Still floods. Then the last guy Allen came out and told me that my grading was good and my landscaping was good but the cement pad unit sits on has sunk and is in a low spot. He keeps blowing me off getting it fixed and he keeps saying he’s going to send out a roofer to fix my missing shingle and again he keeps blowing me off. I’m over this.

We purchased an LGI home in October 2020. My stomach is in knots as we are experiencing electrical issues, I can see underneath my drive way, front patio and stairs leading to the back yard. The earth is pulling away from the foundation. There are several other issues that are just sickening. Please feel free to contact me. Thank you all for your bravery.

We purchased our home in San Antonio back in 2017 and from the start been having issues! This is our first home and it’s been a nightmare. We had a roof leak and the builder tried saying it was weather related when indeed it wasn’t per the roofers comments!

  10. M Ríos says:

We purchased and LGI home in AZ in 2019. Let me emphasize how terrible the structure is in my home. Water leaks, roof leaks, baseboard leaks, soaked carpets, the ceiling almost ready to fall and we cant use that restroom. A/C unit not working! The window in our master bedroom ready to come off because we had a sand/wind storm. Plumbing issues! Just overall a headache from our first night here. I have 4 kids one of them a baby. They are constantly sick and never ever had the respiratory problems they’ve been having before!
