HP All-in-One Printers class action lawsuit overview:
- Who: Two customers filed a class action lawsuit against HP, Inc.
- Why: The consumers claim HP fails to disclose a design flaw in its All-in-One Printers that prevents users from scanning or faxing without sufficient ink.
- Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.
Two owners of HP All-in-One Printers filed a class action lawsuit against the tech company for misrepresenting the functionality of the printers, which allegedly cannot scan or fax when ink is low or empty.
This design flaw pushes owners of All-in-One Printers to purchase ink cartridges more than is strictly necessary, say Gary Freund and Wayne McMath, who filed the class action lawsuit against HP, Inc., also known as HP Computing and Printing Inc. Freund owns an HP Envy 6455e All-in-One Wireless Color Printer, and McMath purchased an HP Deskjet 2655 All-in-One Compact Printer, both of which allegedly experience the so-called design flaw.
HP class action claims company forces consumers to purchase ‘incredibly overpriced ink cartridges in perpetuity’
By making printer owners repeatedly buy printer ink, which “can exceed $80 an ounce,” HP stands to make billions of dollars in ink sales alone, according to the HP class action.
“The not-so-hidden secret in the retail printer industry is that manufacturers like HP are very willing to lose money on the sale of printers in order to force consumers to purchase incredibly overpriced ink cartridges in perpetuity,” the complaint says.
To that end, the lawsuit says HP claims in its marketing, advertising, packaging and website representations, that its All-in-One Printers can print, copy, scan and, in some cases, fax documents at any time. However, it supposedly fails to disclose that the scanning and faxing functions of the printer, which do not require ink, do not work if the ink cartridges are low or empty.
Freund and McMath seek monetary damages and injunctive relief requiring HP to cease its allegedly misleading advertising and inform consumers of its alleged errors.
Freund and McMath seek to represent a nationwide class that includes everyone who bought an HP All-in-One Printer for personal/household use at any time within the applicable statute of limitations, as well as California and Minnesota subclasses.

I have 2 of these HP printers that have the same problem stated in this article. I would like to be contacted so I can be included in this class action lawsuit.
I have purchased two HP All in one printer and experienced the same issues with scanning and printing functions being completely disabled until I purchased only HP ink. Even after purchasing the ink my scanner is still disabled. I would like to be included in the class action against HP.
I also purchased an HP All in One printer but was not aware of this issue. Please add if not to late.
I purchased a HP 6455e All-in-one wireless printer, and when I cancelled my subscription for ink, the printer stopped working. I had only had it for 3 months. It is now less than a year and a half old, and does not work. HP tried fixing it remotely, which never worked. The one year warranty ran out with no resolution. I have a HP Envy desktop printer that crashed right after the warranty expired. I would very much like to join this class action lawsuit. I have everything documented including times of all calls and who I spoke to.
Yes I have 2 printers of HP and the first I thought went out so I went to buy another and same thing is happening now I can’t print nothing out and they want me to pay for a membership but I can’t afford I’m a single mom my kids are home schooled that’s why I got them but I can’t even use them so now my kids are behind everything but yes these is so frustrated and very unfair the cost me from 180 to 250 and it’s very expensive I’m glad someone spoke up about these.
I just gave up, had two hp all in one, eventually purchased another brand.
Yes, I as well purchased the hpenvy 6400 all in one printer and experienced the same problems. I can’t even use the printer unless I’m subscribed to their ink refill program. I had plenty of ink so I stopped my subscription because I kept getting charged for ink I didn’t need. Then they double charged me for my subscription. After canceling my subscription with them I had to reenroll with them because they stopped all functionality to my printer. I was so mad. So I have to continue to subscribe and pay for ink I don’t need because I can’t use any functions on my printer/scanner/copier/faxer if I don’t. I would like to be contacted regarding this lawsuit please.
I Would like to be included in this class action suit, too. I have a printer that won’t print in black when any color ink cartridge is low, though the black cartridge is full.
We had the same problem with our HP all in one printer. What are the eligable dates for this class action suit?
Ione an HP all in one printer. I was buying 4 to 5 multipack cartridges per year, at least. It is true that when a color is low, you cannot print black only. Also, when replacing the cartridges that indicated they were low they appeared to still contain quite an and amount of ink, I would say that about 35-45% of the ink remained in the cartridge, unused.
My hp printer has been sitting dormant for 2 or more years because it ran out of ink. I purchased ink from HP and it doesn’t line up with my printer. I would like to join the lawsuit, how do I?
