Gas stove ban overview:

  • Who: The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) clarified that it is not considering a ban on gas stoves.
  • Why: The comments followed pushback from lawmakers and the gas industry after a CPSC commissioner told Bloomberg that the agency was considering a ban.
  • Where: Around 40% of homes in the United States reportedly have gas stoves.

The head of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) clarified that it does not plan to place a ban on gas stoves days after a member of the agency said it was considering prohibiting the devices.

In a statement, CPSC head Alexander Hoehn-Saric says the agency is “not looking to ban gas stoves” but is researching ways to lessen indoor air quality hazards, Bloomberg reported

Hoehn-Saric’s comments reportedly come after CPSC commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. previously told Bloomberg that the agency would consider a ban on gas stoves as a way to address the hazards they posed.

The gas industry and lawmakers, including Sen. Joe Manchin and House Energy and Commerce Committee chair and representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers, among others, shot back at the idea of placing a ban on gas stoves.

Gas stove ban a ‘recipe for disaster,’ senator tweets

“This is a recipe for disaster. The federal government has no business telling American families how to cook their dinner,” Manchin tweeted. “I can tell you the last thing that would ever leave my house is the gas stove that we cook on.”

Around 40% of homes in the United States have natural gas stoves, which, according to the Environmental Protection Agency and World Health Organization, emit air pollutants such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide that are linked to causing cancer and cardiovascular problems, among other things, Bloomberg reported.

In October, Consumer Reports reportedly urged consumers in the market for a new stove to think about purchasing an electric device instead of a gas one.

  1. Stacey K says:

Please add me! I hate electric stoves

  2. Gregory Danner says:

The public should be warned if products are created and sold which could have an adverse effect our health Add me please

  3. Carlos Trevino says:

For those that want electric stoves, they are missing the most important factor. The government is doing this on purpose to see if they can control us just a little more. Not only that but if they are taking our food away having an electric stove they would pull the plug on electricity and then we would not be able to cook our food. It’s not a good idea! It’s all about Communism.! When will 50% of America Wake-Up? And, one more thing it’s about Government Distraction, to make us think of this vs. what is going on in Washington. They think we are all stupid.

I feel the government should mind their own business. Are we living in a communist state and not a free America? I love cooking with gas and have done so for many years. My house is ventilated when cooking. I have had an electric stove and feel they are a hazard especially when you cannot see how hot the coils are and remain hot after cooking, eg. you can get burnt as well. What are we to do when the power lines are out and we cannot cook and keep warm? Next, Is the government going to tell how many times you are allowed to go to the bathroom and use water?

  5. Kevin Eldredge says:

We like cooking, and heating with gas. It’s well ventilated in our home. In power outage our small generator is able to run our house due to the major heat load from natural gas. Like gas?, good for you. Like electric? Good for you. Now get on with you lives.

  6. Crist Hicks says:

    Add me

  7. Marjorie says:

I cook on gas and do a lot of canning on a gas stove using propane and we also have a gas generator and our electrical goes out during storms and fires and we can’t rely on it sometimes for days to weeks at a time.

  8. Vernita Orr says:

We cook with on gas stove. I didn’t realize how much it could effect my health until I read about this lawsuit. Now that I have its making me think about the potential impact on my family health. We all do things that improve our health such as: when we gain weight, we work out to improve our body. We change the way we eat. If we see signs of wrinkles in our skin, we go and by product that we know is not going to work, but we buy it anyway. Why because we want to be healthy. So if our stove is causing us health problems, why not change to a electric stove. We do other things to improve our health why not this? Do get me wrong I love cooking on my gas stove but my health is more important. Hope all will agree.

  9. Diane says:

Gas stoves are life savers in many states due to weather and loss of electrical power. I have been a cook for over 50 years and gas stoves have and always will be the better choice.

  10. Melissa yant says:

I believe there should be a ban on gas stoves for sure. They are a pain in ass to cook on amongst being fire safety hazard. It’s an open flame and there isn’t good outcome if something ever did happen .

    1. Janet sarvis says:

I live in western New York & electric is not reliable due to storms. During our last blizzard gas ovens saved lives by allowing people to boil water/cook to keep warm
