According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), a patient tested positive for Salmonella Reading that was genetically related to a sample of Jennie O ground turkey found unopened in the patient’s home.

The FSIS has been working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state public health and agricultural agencies to determine the origin of sickness involving 216 patients in 38 states and the District of Columbia. The investigation is ongoing, which means additional products may join the Jennie O recall list.

Ground Turkey in Jennie O Recall Might be in Freezers

Even though none of the affected products covered by the Jennie O recall should remain on store shelves, FSIS fears that some consumers might have purchased multiple packages to freeze for later use.

“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them,” says the FSIS. “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

FSIS also reminds consumers that salmonella bacteria, the reason for the Jennie O recall, cannot be seen, smelled or tasted. There is no way to screen the ground turkey for salmonella once it is purchased and brought home.

In the efforts to control bacterial contamination of foods, FSIS recommends the following food handling protocol:

  • Clean – wash hands and surfaces often.
  • Separate – separate raw meat from other foods. Do not use the same cutting board for raw meat that you use for vegetables.
  • Cook – Cook to the right temperature. Ensure the proper temperature is reached by using a meat thermometer.
  • Chill – Refrigerate food promptly. Do not leave leftovers sitting out.
