Fiji water microplastics class action overview:

  • Who: The Wonderful Co. is facing a class action lawsuit related to the quality of Fiji bottled water.
  • Why: The Fiji water lawsuit alleges the company falsely advertises Fiji water as natural artesian water, when in reality its products contain microplastics.
  • Where: The Fiji class action was filed in Cook County, Illinois, Chancery Court.

A new class action lawsuit alleges that the company behind Fiji bottled water is falsely advertising its product as natural artesian water when it actually contains microplastics.

The Wonderful Co. faces claims of fraud and unjust enrichment over its alleged deception about the quality of its water. The class action lawsuit also claims the company violates the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act.

Microplastics are small particles that come from the manufacturing and degradation of plastic.

Microplastics are toxic to life, Fiji water class action says

Studies have shown microplastics to be dangerous to many organisms, although the particles’ effects have not been extensively investigated in humans, the class action says.

“Toxic effects of microplastics on the physiology and behavior of marine invertebrates have been extensively documented,” the class action says. “Similar effects have also been observed in larger marine vertebrates such as fish. Furthermore, recent studies using mouse models have reported potential effects of microplastics on mammalian gut microbiota, as well as cellular and metabolic toxicity in the host.”

When ingested, microplastics travel through the circulatory system and accumulate in organs. This can lead to harmful effects, such as gastrointestinal issues, hormonal disruption and impaired reproductive function, the class action lawsuit says.

In 2018, a study of 259 water bottles from 11 brands purchased in nine separate countries showed 93% of the bottled water contained microplastics.

The maker of Fiji water previously faced a 2011 class action lawsuit claiming the company falsely advertised its products as carbon-negative.

I ordered three cases of Fiji water and all three cases arrived on February 12th. I received an email from Amazon about a recall on the Fiji water containing high level of microplastic. Unfortunately I had already drink all three cases. However, I do have a half of bottle sitting on my dresser. I can honestly say that I have been extremely unwell and I’m not getting any better. I stay extremely dehydrated and I have lost a lot of weight. I also been diagnosed with an acute thickening of the upper wall in my upper intestines. There other things going on with me as well. I know what’s happening to me isn’t normal, it’s unnatural. I stay in agonizing pain. I’ve never felt any physical pain like this in my entire life. The only way I can describe the pain I’m having to endure is evil due to the pain never shows me any mercy. I don’t even recognize my own body. I haven’t any reason to not speak truthfully. I’m terrified of everything going on with my overall health because it’s all wrong. I pray that no one else is having to endure what I’m having to endure. That’s wishful thinking on my part. I’m 52, will I live to see 53? I don’t think I could with the unbearable pain I’m in. Nobody should ever have to live what life they have left in pain that I truly can’t explain. But it feels evil and it’s not letting go of me either. I pray that God will remove all plastic bottled water from all stores. Babies coming into this world with plastic in their little innocent system. Water was the most precious gift that God blessed his children with. Because without water life will slowly die out. I know God isn’t happy with what’s going on and eventually he will revenge what was taken for granted.
