Klondike Choco Taco discontinued overview:

  • Who: Klondike has announced that it is discontinuing its Choco Taco ice cream sandwich product.
  • Why: Klondike says it is discontinuing the Choco Taco so that it could focus on a rising demand for its other products.
  • Where: The Choco Taco was sold nationwide.

Klondike announced last week that it will be discontinuing its fan-favorite Choco Taco ice cream sandwich nearly 40 years after it made its debut.

An increase in demand in other Klondike products led to the company’s decision to discontinue the Choco Taco, Klondike says in an email to CNN Business

“Over the past 2 years, we have experienced an unprecedented spike in demand across our portfolio and have had to make very tough decisions to ensure availability of our full portfolio nationwide,” Klondike tells CNN Business.

Klondike acknowledged to CNN Business that its decision to discontinue the Choco Taco “may be very disappointing” to consumers who are fans of a product that the company debuted back in 1983.

What differentiated the Choco Taco from other ice cream sandwiches is that the waffle cone the ice cream was housed in was in the shape of a taco — a game changer for the ice cream sandwich space, according to Inventor Alan Drazen.

Klondike originally distributed Choco Taco out of ice cream trucks

Drazen, in a 2016 interview with Eater, says the shape of the Choco Taco allowed a consumer to experience all of its contents and ingredients in a single bite.

“When you eat a sugar cone, you generally eat the nuts, chocolate and ice cream on the top,” Drazen tells Eater. “With the Choco Taco you’re getting the ice cream, cone, nuts and chocolate with just about every bite.”

The Choco Taco was initially sold to consumers out of ice cream trucks before Unilever, the company which owns Klondike, decided to start distributing it on a wider scale, CBS News reports

Class action lawsuits revolving around ice cream have made headlines recently with Rebel Creamery facing claims last month that it misleads customers about the healthiness of its ice cream products

Consumers behind the Rebel Creamery class action claim it runs a deceptive marketing scheme aimed at convincing consumers that its “high-fat” ice cream products are actually healthier than those produced by its competitors.

Also last month, a class action lawsuit accusing Costco of falsely advertising the chocolate contents of its Chocolate Almond Dipped Vanilla Ice Cream Bars was dismissed by a federal judge in Illinois.
