Real Water Sold Online After Recall Over Hepatitis, Warns FDA

Despite a nationwide recall after a hepatitis outbreak was linked to the product, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says it discovered Real Water still available for sale online, according to a recent update by the agency.

The FDA updated its “Investigation of Acute Non-viral Hepatitis Illnesses – ‘Real Water’ Brand Alkaline Water” publication Wednesday to warn consumers not to drink the product or give it to pets.

“The FDA has become aware that Real Water brand alkaline water is still being offered for sale through online retailers,” says the updated publication. “The agency is working to locate any remaining products to ensure they are no longer available to consumers.”

The FDA also says it “will continue to monitor this situation closely and follow up with retailers as we become aware of recalled products being offered for sale.”

Real Water recalled its products nationwide on March 24, 2021, due to possible health risks. The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have since been investigating the company. In its update, the FDA says that the investigation is ongoing. The agency is reviewing the information provided by Real Water, inspecting its facilities in Nevada and Arizona, along with water samples.

The FDA’s update also says that seven additional cases of acute non-viral hepatitis linked to Real Water products have been identified by Southern Nevada health authorities.

“The FDA is reiterating that it is crucial that consumers, restaurants, distributors, and retailers not drink, cook with, sell, or serve ‘Real Water’ alkaline water,” says the update. “FDA also advises that this water not be served to pets.”

The company faces mounting litigation over the alleged contamination from consumers who say they or their family members became severely ill after consuming Real Water products, including at least one class action lawsuit.

Depositions have reportedly been started in at least one lawsuit over Real Water. A local attorney representing more than 40 people who claim they were sickened by Real Water told KCTV 5 that several “bad batches” came out of the plant. A Real Water technician reportedly stated in a deposition that he brought some of that water home to his dog, who became ill.

The technician also reportedly admitted that he had no training in safe food handling prior to getting a job at the Real Water plant.

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this situation for further developments.

  1. Elaine E Rachal says:

I will not buy this dangerous water. I live in Clark County Nevada and saw on the news how dangerous this locally produced water is and how many people suffered serious medical issues from drinking it. I am shocked that it’s still be sold, even on line. It needs a hazard materials tag and a skull & crossbones warning label or disposed of at a nuclear waste site.
