UPDATE:
- Real Water President Brent Jones issued a statement on March 17, 2021, asking stores nationwide to remove the product from the shelves.
A Las Vegas water company is being accused of selling toxic water to residents.
A couple filed a lawsuit against Real Water after their two-year-old child suffered liver damage they claim is from drinking the water, according to a local CBS affiliate 8 News Now. Court documents reportedly allege that the boy had to be air lifted to a children’s hospital after suffering a liver malfunction in November 2020. The family claims that his liver enzymes were so far out of the range of normal, he qualified for a liver transplant.
His mother says that, during the same time that the family was consuming the allegedly toxic water, she suffered from extreme tiredness and nausea.
While the family’s lawsuit is not a class action, according to reports, Top Class Actions is covering this story because thousands of Nevadans, and possibly consumers in other states, may be affected.
This week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about the reportedly toxic water sold under the Real Water brand.
The FDA’s statement notes that five cases of acute liver failure stemming from acute non-viral hepatitis were reported in young children who consumed Real Water’s alkaline water.
“The consumption of ‘Real Water’ brand alkaline water is the only common link identified between all of these cases to date,” points out the agency, while indicating that it will investigate the issue further.
Real Water is also under investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and the Southern Nevada Health District, reports 8 News Now. A number of other children have reportedly been treated and transferred for similar liver problems.
“We are advising consumers, restaurants and retailers to not consume, cook with, sell or serve ‘Real Water’ alkaline water until more information is known about the cause of the illnesses,” the FDA said in its warning issued March 16. The agency notes that individuals who consumed the water should be on the lookout for symptoms of illness, including loss of appetite, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting.
Real Water touts itself as “a premium drinking water with 9.0 pH.” Its website says that the alkalized water “can help your body to restore balance and reach your full potential.”
The company is based in Nevada and operates throughout North America. The company only recently told stores to pull Real Water from the shelves “throughout the United States until the issue is resolved.”
“Our goal is to diligently work with the FDA to achieve a swift resolution,” continued the reported statement issued by Real Water President Brent Jones this week.
