Grand Design Makes Leaky RV, Provides Bogus ‘Fixes’ to Waste Warranty Period, Class Action Alleges

A company that manufactures RVs dodges liability on a known defect by providing “band-aid” fixes that don’t work to burn out its customers’ warranty periods, a new nationwide class action lawsuit alleges.

In a class action complaint filed Thursday in a Florida federal court, Plaintiff Gregory Gorecki alleges Grand Design RV violated multiple federal warranty laws and Florida consumer law in the sale and service of its Imagine Series RV.

Gorecki alleges the Imagine Series RV suffers from a defect in an exterior seal which causes water to enter the vehicle, causing damage and mold.

While Grand Design knew about the defect due to multiple customer complaints and warranty repairs, the class action lawsuit alleges the company kept manufacturing its RVs that way and adopted a practice of providing superficial fixes in order to waste customers’ warranty periods.

“Rather than honor its warranty and replace the defective components of the RV with non-defective parts or an RV of similar value, Grand Design pretends that certain ‘fixes’ will cure the water intrusion problem caused by the Defect,” the class action states.

“If a customer complains within the warranty period, Grand Design covers the cost of limited warranty repairs despite knowledge that these ‘repairs’ will hide and potentially delay, but not resolve, the Defect.”

After the three year warranty period, Grand Design strictly denies any warranty repairs, the class action states. The RV’s base model starts at about $29,000.

Gorecki says his own experience is echoed by many other buyer complaints across a range of forums online. The class action includes screenshots of many of these online discussions.

“This chorus of complaints shows that Grand Design has manufactured the RV defectively for years, and that its common practice is to only sign off on superficial repairs until the Warranty Period expires, all the while knowing that such repairs will not actually remedy the Defect.”

The class action said the leak put RV owners at a significant safety risk due to the mold, and potential inhalation of spores.

Gorecki is looking to represent anyone who bought an Imagine Series RV in the United States with model years 2017 to 2021, plus a Florida subclass.

He is seeking certification of the class action, damages and compensation, fees, costs, an injunction, interest and a jury trial.

Meanwhile, automakers are responsible for knowing about defects at the time that vehicles are being manufactured and before they lead to serious accidents and injuries.

If you own a vehicle that you believe has a safety defect and you are outside of the warranty period, or you believe the defect should be covered by the warranty and it’s not, or you or a family member have been injured by a safety related defect, you may qualify to join a defective vehicle safety recall class action lawsuit investigation. 2022 Solitude: it has been parked at the delivery location since the dealer delivered it after adding upgrades during the initial purchase. Winegard system does not work. Massage Recliner does not work on the right side. Oven stopped working. All have been communicated to GD and I’m still waiting on parts since October 2022. Today I discovered that none of the windows are sealed and mold is forming. I decided to lift the mattress and inspect the bed area and found mold everywhere! On the wood frame, on the mattress, wood flooring, wall panels, standing water in all window frames, paneling is warping. Also noticed that water is seeping from the shower base and from two of the slide outs at the floor. Paid over 100k brand new. After reading multiple forums and complaints. I see that Grand Design/Winnebago refuse to take responsibility and this will most likely be a battle to get resolved. How do you construct a travel trailer and not even make sure it is water tight?

  2. Frank Martin says:

I am now an owner of my 3rd Grand Design product. My first trailer was replaced by Grand Design in exchange for an NDA. My 3rd trailer now needs a complete new roof at my expense, $8,700. (2 1/2 years in service) Grand Design advertises a 12 year warranty on their roof membrane. What they fail to advertise is that the warranty does not include the adhesive used or the quality of the original workmanship. there are many you tube documented Grand Design roof failure warranty claims denied. I believe the bigger issue with Grand Design is warranty and superior customer service claims. I believe their advertising is misleading consumers. Feel free to contact me for more specifics.

How did you get them to replace it?

We bought a 2022 367bhs so many issues with this unit. Electric jack rusted from day one, valve stems on all tires rusted, bunk house couch big tear, couch in living room was never bolted down, bunk house couch never bolted down, pieces falling out if a/c mounts, dining table came out of floor while traveling, none of the exterior storage doors will stay closed frames are all bent, had a huge flood on first trip because toilet line was not installed properly, bunkhouse lights didnt work because slide tore the wiring out, outlet by microwave fell out of wall, flooding shorted out the refrigerator causing everything to thaw out, theres a raw 2×4 behind refrigerator assuming its holding our refrigerator in place, awning had hole in it.
We are being told they will repair this stuff.
I bought this brand new I want new stuff not repaired stuff.
If I wanted used stuffed or repaired stuff I would of bought a used unit.
Every time we take this unit out which is often we find screws and parts laying on the floor.

With the amount of claims for slide defects. It’s a wonder there isn’t a class action suit against Grand Design

  5. PowderPostBeetle Victim says:

Grand Design’s Travel Trailers also have a known problem with untreated wood causing Powder Post Beetle infestations inside the Travel Trailers. This is being kept hush-hush!!! You have to fight Grand Design for them to approve your warranty claim for this issue. We are victims to this on a brand new 2022 2600RB.

  6. John keely says:

Im not sure about those issues, but grand design labels 260rd as 4 season.. but it is not and have tankless water heater that should go below 39 degrees.. numerous complaints on blogs about this and replacements paid by customers

    1. John keely says:

Should not go below 39 degrees

  7. Connie says:

would like to know outcome/status of this case

    Please add me

  10. Pierre Gagnon says:

Stress cracks on fiberglass front cap on a 2 year old Grand Design 5th wheel costing thousands of dollars to fix. Grand Design denied a warranty claim and accused me of hitting my trailer with my towing vehicle. I did not ever hit my trailer with my towing vehicle. The body shop that provided me an estimate attributed that cause of the cracks to a poor quality front cap. From other Grand Design trailer owners, this appears to be a commun problem with newer trailers which is not acceptable. Nobody should be expected to pay thousands of dollars in repair for poor quality parts on their nearly new Grand Design trailers.
