Dark silver Jeep Compass - 2018 Jeep Compass

UPDATE: On July 27, 2020, the Jeep Compass class action lawsuit was dismissed.

A recent oil consumption class action lawsuit claims that the 2018 Jeep Compass consumes an excessive amount of oil.

Plaintiff Thomas Weiner says he purchased a 2018 Jeep Compass believing that the vehicle would be safe and free of defects. Unfortunately, after two years and 25,000 miles on the vehicle, Weiner allegedly started to experience stalling while operating the vehicle normally.

In September 2019, while driving to work, Weiner allegedly attempted to make a right turn but was surprised when his vehicle’s emergency brake engaged, his engine stalled and he lost the ability to accelerate. He says he had to drift his vehicle to the side of the road to avoid a collision. Allegedly, only after the engine stall did his vehicle indicate that it had critically low oil.

Later that day, Weiner’s 2018 Jeep Compass reportedly stalled once more without warning. This time, like before, the oil pressure warning light allegedly failed to engage before the stalling incident.

As a result of the stalls, Weiner claims he brought his vehicle to his dealership six times for the issue. Each time, he was allegedly forced to pay for an engine oil refill and drive another 1,000 miles to test the issue. According to the class action lawsuit, the 2018 Jeep Compass was burning through a quart of oil every 500 miles.

Engine oil cap - 2018 Jeep Compass“Plaintiff’s engine oil had descended below the threshold Defendant designates as safe, rendering his vehicle at risk of sudden engine stalling without warning,” the Jeep Compass class action lawsuit alleges.

“Exacerbating the danger is the fact that Plaintiff’s Oil Pressure Warning Light and other engine oil monitors fail to engage prior to engine stalling and vehicle inoperability.”

Only on Weiner’s sixth visit to the dealership did the company authorize an engine replacement after the dealership allegedly acknowledged that the vehicle’s engine suffered from an oil consumption defect. In February, he reportedly had his engine replaced.

According to Weiner, the oil consumption defect can be traced to the engines found in some Jeep vehicles – the 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir II Engines. A defect in these engines allegedly cause vehicles to consume oil at a “furious pace.”

The Jeep class action lawsuit argues that Weiner and other consumers have been forced to pay out of pocket for repairs and have been repeatedly inconvenienced due to the defective engines. Even worse, the defect allegedly puts drivers and passengers at risk for collisions if a vehicle stalls during normal use.

“This defect results in critically low engine oil levels, and causes vehicles installed with Defendant’s 2.4L Tigershark engines to stall and lose power without warning,” the 2018 Jeep Compass class action lawsuit alleges.

Weiner seeks to represent a Class of consumers who purchased or leased vehicles equipped with a 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir II Engine. He also seeks to represent a state subclass of the same consumers from Illinois.

Due to the alleged defect in 2018 Jeep Compass vehicles and other vehicles equipped with the same engine, Weiner and other consumers have allegedly been financial damaged. The Jeep Compass class action contends that suffered damages include overpayment for vehicles, out of pocket expenses of frequent oil changes, increased service visits, costs of future repairs and diminished vehicle values.

To compensate Weiner and the proposed Class for their alleged damages, the 2018 Jeep Compass class action lawsuit seeks injunctive relief, actual damages, compensatory damages, punitive damages, interest, court costs and attorneys’ fees.

This is not the first time Fiat Chrysler has faced legal action over oil consumption in its vehicles. In last month’s legal news, plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit against the company taking issue with the same Tigershark engine. In May, another class action lawsuit challenged the same issue.

Plaintiffs in these cases argued that several vehicles are equipped with the defective engine, including: 2014 – 2020 Jeep Cherokee;  2017 – 2020 Jeep Compass; 2015 – 2020 Jeep Renegade; 2015 – 2016 Chrysler 200; 2013 – 2016 Dodge Dart; and 2016 – 2020 Fiat 500X models.

I have a 2018 Compass Limited and had the same issue of my car stalling out and the low oil pressure light coming on. The second time I took it in for the same issue they ran a test which was ended/evaluated at 1350 miles and I was told it was in acceptable limits. I called my regular service advisor the next day who told me to bring my car back when it was next due for an oil change or when it happened again and he would start a new test since he was off the day before when I had come back in. I just had it happen again and went in. They kept my car for 2 days and recommended a new engine, however my car is not at 61,700 in mileage so they want me to pay $1,000 to have it repaired because the power train warranty expired. My extended warranty company (not Mopar) will pay for it and has authorized the repair with a $100 deductible, but they will only cover a used engine. Chrysler needs to fix this! It is a known issue in this model and it was documented by my dealership prior to my warranty expiring. I have a call in to Chrysler and they have escalated my case, but waiting for a response later today/tomorrow. If they don’t cover this, I want to pursue this further!

I have a 2018 Jeep Compass and multiple times now since buying it brand new..it has turned off while driving and the low oil light has flashed quick while turning a corner. The first two times it happened I checked the oil and it was down about 1-2 qts. This last time it happened…it was down THREE QUARTS and I’ve only put 3173 miles on it since my last oil change! This engine needs to be RECALLED. I would like to know how I can get in on this class action suit!!

  3. Kevin Watkins Jr says:

Purchased my 2018 Jeep Compass new, it has stalled on me 3-4 times between oil changes. Dealership explained that car has excessive oil consumption problem, but it is out of warranty. Now What!!! Car is only two years oil!

  4. DAVID SCHUMANN says:

2018 Jeep Compass Trailhawk….just bought it and the dipstick is showing half of the oil has been consumed in just over 1000 miles. going to the dealership today to see what is going on. I would like more info on this class action lawsuit.

I also have a 2018 Jeep Compass (Latitude) and it is burning oil. Every time I go for a an oil change, I am being told that I either had no oil or low oil. And IO have it documented on my oil change receipts from Jiffy Lube. I have had instances where my car has stalled and the emergency brakes would suddenly turn on and and I would not be able to move the car. I did not know how wide spread these issues were. I’m glad I decided to look around online today. And what do ya know, someone else from Illinois has the same problems with their Jeep Compass..

  6. Lisa says:

I bought a 2018 Jeep Compass latitude in 2019. 4 months later stalled out. Not a drop of oil in it! Been dealing with oil consumption test for a whole year! I think there finally going to replace the engine..but I’m scared there going to put the same tigershark engine in.
I believe I was sold this car knowing that it had engine issues. Can’t believe Jeep has not recalled these engines.

  7. Frank says:

I have a 2018 Compass Trailhawk with the exact same issue. At one point, the indicator light came on after I had parked the car (fortunately). I checked the dip stick and there was only a slight hint of oil on the tip, well outside of the normal/safe threshold. I now drive with at least one quart of oil in my trunk as a safety precaution. The dealerships have persistently told me that this problem is “characteristic of these engines” and that I need to monitor it closely. Mopar/their affiliated dealers have offered no viable solution to this dangerous problem and need to be held accountable. Can the author please offer guidance on how to get involved with this class action?

  8. Melissa williams says:

I have a 2018 compass and have had multiple issues with including the oil consumption issue and the car not accelerating. After many visits to one jeep location who blamed me no oil then finding another dealer and having oil changes and finally completing the oil consumption test I just received a new engine. No problems yet! I would like to know how to join the lawsuit.

  9. Theresa A Grela says:

I have a 2018 jeep compass limited and had the same issue after almost 6 months I had to get a new engine and car still doesn’t run properly

  10. Jessica says:

I have a 2018 Jeep Compass and have had numerous issues with going through oil too fast. Over the last 1yr and a half with nearly 1000 miles until my next oil change without warning; no light indicators. My jeep will completely shut down; won’t let me put it in park, accelerate, pull over- nothing. Countless times I have been stranded in the middle of a busy highway or road waiting for it to kick over and restart allowing me to get out of traffic. With a small child I cannot express my concerns enough as NO one has helped with this issue. More needs to be done with this HUGE safety issue!!
