Hyundai palisade car windshield crack

A recent class action lawsuit claims vehicle owners may experience a Hyundai Palisade windshield crack defect, which was hidden by the auto company.

The Hyundai Palisade is reportedly marketed as the auto company’s “flagship premium” SUV, providing customers with “exceptional comfort, technology, and safety” and “new levels of all-road, all-weather capability, technology, [and] safety” – all backed by the “Hyundai Assurance—our promise to deliver peace of mind to our customers.”

Unfortunately, according to a recent Hyundai class action lawsuit, these representations fail to account for a serious problem plaguing the SUVs: unexpected cracks in windshields.

Windshield cracks can quickly become a serious issue. Even a small chip in the windshield glass can eventually expand into a larger crack or even a “spiderweb” of cracks spreading across the entire windshield.

Cracks in the windshield can impair a driver’s ability to see the road, placing them and other motorists at risk of collisions and injuries.

Plaintiffs Lorenzo Ford and Tina Forehand claim that they experienced a 2020 Hyundai Palisade windshield crack in their vehicles shortly after purchase. Allegedly, 2020 Hyundai Palisade vehicles are prone to windshield cracks within the early days of use.

“Owners and lessees often experienced the Defect shortly after purchase—even on the first drive home from the dealership,” the Hyundai Palisade windshield crack class action lawsuit notes.

Numerous owners and lessees of 2020 Hyundai Palisade vehicles have allegedly voiced concerns over the issue online and filed official complaints with the National Highway Transportation Safety Authority (NHTSA).

“Within two weeks of purchasing the vehicle, a crack developed in the middle of the windshield, just below the rear-view mirror mount,” one NHTSA complaint states.

“Per the dealership recommendation we went to Safelite for an opinion about the cause, since we had no memory of anything hitting the windshield, and the Safelite manager provided a written opinion (via email) that there was no evidence of impact, and it was his opinion that there was a defect in the glass.

According to the Hyundai Palisade windshield crack class action lawsuit, the dealership routinely denies that there is a defect associated with their vehicles and refuses to provide Hyundai windshield warranty coverage.

Instead, the company allegedly blames the issue on consumers and forces them to pay for repairs out-of-pocket.

Adding insult to injury, the issue may continue despite replacing the windshield. A replaced windshield reportedly suffers from the same defect as the original Palisade windshield, meaning that consumers may have to replace the windshield multiple times.

The expenses of these replacements can reportedly add up quickly. Each time a windshield needs to be replaced, consumers are allegedly forced to pay up to $1,600 in repairs. Additionally, other expenses may accompany the costs of replacement, including the recalibration and realignment of various components, such as rear view cameras and display technologies.

The plaintiffs argue that Hyundai is unlawfully taking advantage of consumers by selling defective vehicles, denying Hyundai windshield warranty coverage, and forcing repair costs on to owners and lessees.

“Selling vehicles with dangerously defective windshields and refusing to take responsibility for the defects is a fraud on consumers,” the Hyundai Palisade windshield crack class action lawsuit argues.

“Hyundai refuses to honor its commitment to its loyal customers, is jeopardizing the safety of the public, and is forcing its customers to bear the expense of its mistakes and malfeasance.”

The plaintiffs seek to represent a Class of current or former owners and lessees of 2020 Hyundai Palisade vehicles. They also seek to represent two subclasses of the same Class Members from Illinois or Washington, respectively.

On behalf of themselves and the proposed Class Members, the plaintiffs seek actual damages, statutory damages, punitive damages, other damages, interest, injunctive relief, court costs, and attorneys’ fees.

The Hyundai Palisade Windshield Crack Class Action Lawsuit is Ford, et al. v. Hyundai Motor America, et al., Case No. 8:20-cv-00890, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

  1. Tammy S Green says:

I have a 2020 Hyundai Palisade and I have had to replace my windshield 3 times within 1 year.
    (1) The first incident occurred in May 2021 when i was riding behind a truck towing a small trailer. Top speed was around 50mph and distance was maintained between both vehicles. A small pebble was thrown against my windshield and caused about a 1.5 inch crack. Within 3 days that crack grew to about 15 inches. It took around 2 weeks to replace this windshield through Safelite.
    (2) Incident #2 took place within 2 days of having the initial windshiield replacement. I got my vehicle home and the next day went outside and there was a HUGE crack that started from the bottom corner passenger size and went straight through to the middle of the windshield. This was the complete opposite side of the initial crack. I called Safelite immediately to report what happened and they said it could be glass stress or rapid temperature change that could have caused the crack. They said they would fix the windshield and for free because it was covered under the warranty of Safelite from initial replacement. I had to wait for that windshield for almost 2 months due to Covid and supply shortages.
    (3) My windshield cracked yet again this weekend on a simple 2 hour road trip. We were riding behind, once again, a truck towing a small trailer and top speed was 40mph due to traffic. A rock/pebble flew up and caused a 1.5 inch crack bottom, center to my windshield. We watched within the 2 hour timespan of the road trip and that crack went from 1.5 inches, to a curved, combined total of about 10 inches. I will now have to file another claim to have this windshield replace.

And on another note, I have been a customer of Hyundai since 2010. I first leased a 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, and then in 2017 I leased a Hyundai Santa Fe Limited. On both of those vehicles, i had to replace windshields for the exact same reasons….driving and a pebble/rock hitting my windshield and instantly causing a crack that ended up expanding to a larger crack that impaired vision while driving.

While i like Hyundai vehicles, the quality of their windshields is absolutely awful. My husband drives a 2018 Toyota Tundra and has had a small ding of a rock hitting his windshield that had not grown since the 2 years since the incident occurred.

This last incident will indeed insure that once the lease is done on this Hyundai, I will never buy Hyundai again.

Had a small crack become a 16” crack in 4 days in my Palisade.

I have a 2022 Hyundai Palisade. I finally received my customer order vehicle on 2/2/2022 and 2 weeks later my front windshield cracked. I took it back to the dealership & was told that it was not covered under warranty. I have not received a new windshield as of yet. I went today (4/1/22) to Safelite and was told that the new windshield that they ordered had about a 6 inch scratch in it. So now they have to order me another one and I have to wait about two weeks to receive a new windshield. About A few weeks ago I see that my passenger front door window is scratched and I had it replaced today (4/1/22) but it was not replace with the original Hyundai glass. I was told at Safelite that the insurance did not cover it so I called the insurance company and was told that they would replace it but it wasn’t stated on the work order that the customer wanted the OEM. So now I have to see if the insurance gonna cover an original window for my door. I am so frustrated with this whole process and I’ve only had the car for two months.

I have a 2022 huyndai Tucson. Windshield is completely shattered. Pieces of shattered glass fall into the car. With expecting my first child in a couple of days I find this a danger to be driving with a newborn. I was driving in the interstate and didn’t see what hit me. Driver’s right side is completely not visible. It’s been three months since I reported it and there is still no ETA on when I will get it fixed. Dealership doesn’t provide a date at all. All they can say there is a back order on windshields.

  5. David L Adams says:

Update to my Hyundai Palisade, Calligraphy, windshield cracking issue.

I got my windshield replaced by safelight with the Hyundai OEM factory one on 3 March 2022 and on 8 March 2022 it was cracked again (nothing hit it). I am scheduled to have it replace again tomorrow. The installer said it was glass stress.

Less than 17 days of owning a new vehicle, I am on me second windshield replacement. Because the cameras require calibration, I must drive 90 miles round trip for it to be installed at the safelight shop.

These windshields are dangerous and have defects. Something need to be done. I have communicated my concern and dissatisfaction to the Hyundai headquarters.

Pls consider extending class action suit to include the 2022 Hyundai Palisade, Calligraphy.

    Thank you,

    David A

  6. Vicky says:

My 2020 Palisade’s windshield cracked with no impact that I can recall. Dealer refused to fix thru warranty.

  7. Al says:

I purchased my 2020 Palisades brand new when they came out. I had it for about a year and when we had a snowstorm in San Antonio I went outside and noticed my windshield was cracked it was struck by a hail of ice. So I called to get it repaired and they won’t honor anything, insurance company is $1400 for the windshield 4375 for programming. I had the front right passenger side repaired right by the mirror a rock hit it in the oddest place. The deep front corner of the window, but it cracked and that cost about 500 bucks. I called and there is not a recall they just said telluride has a recall not them and they will not touch it.

    1. Adrian E. says:

Got this car brand new, paid cash up front because we were so excited for the Palisade. It didn’t take long for that excitement to were down. Within a week of owning the car the windshield was cracked and the upholstery stitching would poke at our arms on the front passenger seat. Dealership gave us the run around but eventually made a sloppy repair to the upholstery but wont repair the windshield. I don’t want to pay 1600 bucks every year to replace a windshield because of a bad design. So now, I drive a 60,000 USD car with a cracked windshield.

  8. Melanie G. says:

2022 tuscan limited. 3 cracks and only 3 payments made! One repaired, 2 crawling all the way across the windshield now. Didn’t by the original truck I wanted due to its windshield having a crack “right off the trailer”.

    1. Yvette Aguilar says:

I have a 2020 palisade and on my 2 replacement. Not once did I hear or see anything hit. I assumed the first time maybe something did hit and I just didn’t hear it. So I replaced it out of pocket because warranty did not cover it according to hyundai. $1,000 afterwards didn’t use the palisade for a couple of weeks and the day we got in to use it another crack! It’s too expensive for me to fix right now. So praying nothing happens while driving.

  9. Mike Cyr says:

I have a 2020 Palisade and unfortunately I am about to replace my 3rd windshield.
Prices have ranged from $1150 CDN to $2600 CDN. It doesn’t seem to matter if a small pebble, a large rock, or nothing at all hits the windshield, it will break. Every time I replace it I think about getting a telluride as they don’t seem to have the same issues.

  10. Harvey Moses says:

I bought my 2020 Palisade Limited in December 2019 from a Florida dealer. In April of 2021 as I was heading to NH from Fl my windshield cracked. My insurance covered some of the cost. As stated to the dealer, I don’t believe anything hit the windshield.
