The American Honda Motor Company has been hit with a class action lawsuit by a vehicle owner who claims that the company’s “Honda Sensing” technology suffers from safety flaws.

Plaintiff Phylistene Ward says the sensing system detects “false positives” or “false alarms,” which result in safety protocols being engaged without warning the driver.

The plaintiff states that she leased a new 2019 Honda CR-V from a Honda dealership in Illinois in June 2019. She says she experienced the defect in the sensing system shortly after she leased the vehicle.

Ward alleges that the CR-V flashed all of its warning lights and alarms during multiple instances, which made her bring the car back to the dealership for assistance and repair.

The plaintiff states that the dealership did not have a solution to the problem besides clearing the error codes. In addition, the dealership performed a test drive but was not able to duplicate the defect.

Ward says she brought the vehicle back to the dealership on five occasions, but they have not been able to fix the car’s sensing defect.

“To this day, and despite five attempts to repair the Defect, Plaintiff’s 2019 Honda CR-V continues to suffer from the Defect, placing her at heightened risk of an accident while also frustrating her ability to operate the vehicle in the manner in which Plaintiff and Honda intended,” the Honda class action complaint notes.

The Honda sensing depends on radar sensors, cameras and computers that are used to avoid collisions by sensing the area surrounding the vehicle. The device will automatically apply the brakes if it senses the need to do so, according to Ward.

In addition, the Honda Sensing technology includes “Collision Mitigation Braking System,” a “Road Departure Mitigation System,” “Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow,” “Lane Keeping Assist System” and a “Cross Traffic Monitor,” according to the plaintiff.

Some of the defects that Ward experienced from the sensing technology include abrupt braking on the highway without warning, displaying numerous warning messages from a false indication of a hazard and alerting drivers to immediately apply the brakes without reason to do so.

Had she been aware of the car’s defect before she bought it, Ward claims she would have either decided not to purchase the vehicle or she would have paid less for it.

The Honda class action lawsuit claims that Honda has sold over 300,000 CR-V vehicles in the past four years.

There are two proposed Classes in this class action lawsuit:

Main Class: All current or former purchasers and lessees of a Honda CR-V equipped with the Honda Sensing system who purchased or leased their vehicles in the United States (other than for purposes of resale or distribution.)

Illinois subclass: All current or former purchasers and lessees of a Honda CR-V equipped with the Honda Sensing system who purchased or leased their vehicles in Illinois (other than for purposes of resale or distribution.)

The plaintiffs are represented by Michael S. Morrison of Alexander Krakow + Glick LLP and Aaron D. Radbil of Greenwald Davidson Radbil PLLC.

The Honda CR-V Sensing Defect Lawsuit is Phylistene Ward v. American Honda Motor Co., Inc, et. al. Case No. 2:20-cv-00511, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

I have a Honda CRV 2018 purchased in 2020. On 3/27/23 it braked automatically without any object in front of it while I was getting off the expressway. Good no one was tailgating me. It happened a year ago also. But this time my neck and back is hurting very bad.

    – When I was switching lanes on the highway my dashboard started flashing brake system problem, steering wheel system problem, tire pressure system problem, etc. The engine light, breaker system light, battery light, steering wheel light, and a few others turned on. After coming to a complete stop my car would not turn off. After pushing the “power button” multiple times it turned off completely.
    – My safety and the safety of others on the road were put at risk when my car started slowing down as if the break was being pushed on its own on a 55 mph highway. My car automatically slowed down to 35mph on its own causing me to park it on a solitary road next to the highway.
    – The car has shown on the dashboard to “brake” when no cars are in front of it a few times before.

Just happened today. Family trip for Christmas. Suddenly every sensor light went off. Had to drive with parking brake stuck on. Would not disengage ground parking brake fit 1 hour trying to get to civilization. Engine lost acceleration. Reboot twice didn’t work. Taking to dealer repair on Christmas Eve all sensors tripped on won’t stop. Parking brake won’t release

I have a honda civic SE 2018 model. At 80 km/h maximum speed limit. I didn’t notice that the one from my front are already stop and the tail light does not turn red. So in short I got a collision and my mitigation collision breaking system does not work. The airbag and my seatbelt was broken. Is this any charges to file in honda? Thanks

2018 honda Crv bought new 6 miles on it 11/18/17 off lot in Asheboro NC . Around 47,000 miles battery had to be replaced and all of the warnings sensory sensors lights have been going off and on . When these sensory lights are malfunctioning it causes the car to randomly pull to the right, slows down at times on its own and can not use cruise control or GPS navigation system. Took it to 4 different honda places who state they can run diagnostic but never can find problems. They clear it for short time but the problem always returns. I have four problems with the motor slowing, stalling or not moving at all on the highway and parking lot , once stalled with transfered truck coming fast on me almost causing wreck if I hadn’t made it off to side of the road the transfer truck would have plowed me over because the car would not go over 10 miles per hour. Have had to start car turn it off again to get motor to catch correct control speed to take off at a slow speed then stop turn off couple times for it to finally get to drive at a appropriate rate of speed. Now the sensing lights never hardly ever go off causing too many problems for myself or husband to drive it safely. The last 2 times I took it I was told they cleared the system, then to drive it 100 miles and it will clear by itself which it did for about 50 miles then it would repeat. Two mechanics have told me it was a problem with the chip and they have not got a plan on how to correct it as the chips are manufactured in China. I do not have the thousands of dollars to invest in diagnostics testing and have no fix for it. The other problem was with the air-conditioned not cooling which there was a leak in it is supposely fixed and coolant gased to fix problem haven’t drove it enough to see if it will stay fixed. Current mileage is 109470. 11/15/22

Purchased a 2018 Honda CR-V EX with 12 miles off the lot. Almost at 5 years with the vehicle 85,000 miles on it and my dashboard lights have been randomly making an appearance and disappearing. After getting tired of seeing these lights become more frequent, I drove to a dealer for them to take a look at it, while they were on. Apparently now my fuel injectors and the fuel induction need to be replaced. I am being asked for $5000-6500 for this. The fuel injectors being an issue is something I have come across in other forums and appears to be the root cause of these dashboard lights. Owing a little left on my vehicle and being faced with these repairs or to get into a lease or another vhicle is not what I intended or expected out of a vehicle less than 5 years old.

We have a Honda CRV whose Braking Mitigation System abruptly stopped in the middle of the road and the car was rear ended. There was nothing in the front of the car that would cause the system to immediately stopped. This incident happened in the state of Illinois 6 July 2022. The service shop could not duplicate the incident and said they could not find anything wrong. Please give me a call to further discuss as I’m looking for an attorney to seek compensation as Honda only wants my family to file an insurance claim and fix the car ourselves.

I have a 2017 Honda CRV Touring and have experienced the dash lighting up more than a dozen times. Never has left me or my wife stranded. Dealership has said there is nothing they know of to fix it and it happens at random times ie… summer, winter, spring and fall. The radio display has started blinking and pinging as well. I believe my wife has video of everything mentioned. Thankfully it has never shutdown or come to a complete stop.

  10. Shyam Venkat says:

On our 2020 Honda Civic, when cruise is enabled with auto-sensing..if the vehicle sees a car on the left side (turning left) and we’re going straight, it’ll more than 90% of the times auto slam the brakes to a near full stop. Very dangerous and erroneous auto sensing in play. Result – (a) Risk of the vehicle behind us rear ending into us (b) Whip lash for passengers and driver

    1. Wendy says:

I have a 2020 a Honda CR-V that is also going through this issue and have to take time off work to keep going to a mechanic. I fear for the my safety and the safety of my kids in this vehicle. I am at 44,000 miles and already having this same issues which occurred while driving the freeway.
