The American Honda Motor Company has been hit with a class action lawsuit by a vehicle owner who claims that the company’s “Honda Sensing” technology suffers from safety flaws.

Plaintiff Phylistene Ward says the sensing system detects “false positives” or “false alarms,” which result in safety protocols being engaged without warning the driver.

The plaintiff states that she leased a new 2019 Honda CR-V from a Honda dealership in Illinois in June 2019. She says she experienced the defect in the sensing system shortly after she leased the vehicle.

Ward alleges that the CR-V flashed all of its warning lights and alarms during multiple instances, which made her bring the car back to the dealership for assistance and repair.

The plaintiff states that the dealership did not have a solution to the problem besides clearing the error codes. In addition, the dealership performed a test drive but was not able to duplicate the defect.

Ward says she brought the vehicle back to the dealership on five occasions, but they have not been able to fix the car’s sensing defect.

“To this day, and despite five attempts to repair the Defect, Plaintiff’s 2019 Honda CR-V continues to suffer from the Defect, placing her at heightened risk of an accident while also frustrating her ability to operate the vehicle in the manner in which Plaintiff and Honda intended,” the Honda class action complaint notes.

The Honda sensing depends on radar sensors, cameras and computers that are used to avoid collisions by sensing the area surrounding the vehicle. The device will automatically apply the brakes if it senses the need to do so, according to Ward.

In addition, the Honda Sensing technology includes “Collision Mitigation Braking System,” a “Road Departure Mitigation System,” “Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow,” “Lane Keeping Assist System” and a “Cross Traffic Monitor,” according to the plaintiff.

Some of the defects that Ward experienced from the sensing technology include abrupt braking on the highway without warning, displaying numerous warning messages from a false indication of a hazard and alerting drivers to immediately apply the brakes without reason to do so.

Had she been aware of the car’s defect before she bought it, Ward claims she would have either decided not to purchase the vehicle or she would have paid less for it.

The Honda class action lawsuit claims that Honda has sold over 300,000 CR-V vehicles in the past four years.

There are two proposed Classes in this class action lawsuit:

Main Class: All current or former purchasers and lessees of a Honda CR-V equipped with the Honda Sensing system who purchased or leased their vehicles in the United States (other than for purposes of resale or distribution.)

Illinois subclass: All current or former purchasers and lessees of a Honda CR-V equipped with the Honda Sensing system who purchased or leased their vehicles in Illinois (other than for purposes of resale or distribution.)

Do you own a Honda CR-V and had issues with the sensing technology? If so, leave a message in the comments section below.

The plaintiffs are represented by Michael S. Morrison of Alexander Krakow + Glick LLP and Aaron D. Radbil of Greenwald Davidson Radbil PLLC.

The Honda CR-V Sensing Defect Lawsuit is Phylistene Ward v. American Honda Motor Co., Inc, et. al. Case No. 2:20-cv-00511, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

I have a 2019 Hr-V and while accelerating the car comes to a complete stop. I’m not near the car in front. My daughter and I were yanked and suffered whipblash as a result of car prematurely braking and made our bodies forcibly lodge forward. This is not onky a hazard for a
Possible rear end collision, it causes the driver and passengers bodily harm and injury.

  2. Michelle L. Watch says:

Yes, I have had the same issue with my 2019 CR-V.

  3. Sandy L White says:

Yup, you can add my name to list. 2018 CR-V. I’ve experienced same issues with false safety systems warnings. Can’t demo to dealership since sensors all reset within 3 seconds of coming to a complete stop with engine running. Bought new and issue very sporadic over 3+ years I’ve own vehicle. Currently occurring pretty regularly 1st drive of day if I take the interstate at anywhere from 5 to 8 miles into the drive. Had the “brake at hwy speeds for no reason” occur twice but last time more than a year ago. . Thankfully reapplying gas prevents continued auto braking. Similar dealership response as others commented. They can’t reproduce.

I’ve had the same problems with my Honda 2018 CRV it’s a beautiful car but when I drive it all of the lights start flashing to tell me that every single system I have is not working car runs fine but you can’t tell whether you’re in trouble or not because it tells you the brakes aren’t working ,
that lane assist isn’t working and on and on and on. I have been to two different Honda dealers and one dealer made me change the windshield, they thought that was it, so I had to spend money to do that. It didn’t work next they wanted me to change my injectors for $450. I’m not doing it because there’s something seriously wrong with the circuit board or something in this car. I’m so glad to have found this class action suit. Please send me information. This wuas an expensive car and only has 16,000 miles.

My wife just got in an accident due to failure of the LKAS(lane keeping assistance system). The car forced her to collide with another vehicle.

My 2019 Honda CR-V has been having issues with warning beeping sounds while driving. Mostly on the highway at high speeds. No matter if I drive with cruise control or use of the pedal, at numerous times it beeps like putting on the left/right turn signal and there is a car on either side, but there is no vehicles when this happens. It confuses me and I start looking for any dangers just to see there is not. This is causing a driving hazard cause I have to look away from front of me to the sides to make sure no one is going to hit me, taking my eyes off the roads of cars in front of me. Also when I tell them on the phone they seem to not be too interested in this issue. They say just bring it down and they will take a look at it.

I have a Honda CR-V hybird 2021 . I have tried to get them to fix ele and other problem since I bought it in tucson as at auto mail. I have mult time where ele system had no back up flashing codes time set back and just so very many problems can even list . This car has problem I sure it the hybrid which we was told would give great mileage and had a 10 yr ganranty . I wanted the easiest no stress car I could get and the salesman was very clear on that. That refuse to fix it and you have a heritable problem getting them to get back when they do they promised someone from Honda would come down and inspect. One time they did not even give me paperwork after keeping it a week. This time when I asked why he not writing down and was told he has a great memory. After a few day called and wanted a list of what there going to fix and gave email.. always so busy . Mánager is so very nice and always busy.msaid they would have Honda person look at it after com planted on internet and mentioned name since NO ONE GETS BACK first it was phone problem in there area always some.McCarthy been with them two week and I made over seven phone calls and had to go down there there time to get ahold of the manger. Waited 45 mins two times. .. there no end to this something very wrong with this car and it very dangerous. It gotten me in two severe problem . Today I received a call back and finally a list of what wrong that was totally incomplete as to what was said to him and I was told he did not need my list. I had a horrible accident six year ago and wanted some reliability and easy to use. The salesman sold it on a fri night at 7 pm and never even went in it before purchached since to tire that day. Cancer diagnosis at that time… I am sure they know what wrong and just putting thing off as not for recall or lemon I think recall. There ele engine and so many thing campuses horitable problems. They told me they sell a tie a rim coverage and went back in two day and could not get ahold of the fellow. Than went again next day waited around was told when I finally got him mupyself after waiting a half hr. That I needed to now buy a 3500 first. That is not whatt I was told by him the prior day over the phone .if I had know I could give the car back at that time I sure might of. So frustrated. Sales sales sale they had no problem with that even had to block there number with so very many calls. Triston who sold the car knew we had one on hold at car max and we’re going over there .nice kid believed him he quite right after.. we never even drove the car before . Something really up with these hybrids and Honda. 2021 . I don’t want to beleive i this silly to keep believing since once again nothing as promised in two weeks there again. Can even trust it to go to mayo .l they don’t care and yet the manger always seem to say the right thing no follow up . This car has caused unbelievable stree and trama. Nothing working and this time found out no one from Honda main came by as promised over three mos ago. Wrote on one of these thing mos ago and than the manager got back to me wondering if it because I mention his name idk. They just put you off and try not to put things in writing or even give paperwork one time in shop. Car been down most the time either in shop or scard to drive. And trying to get fixed. .. can’t even deal with main Honda. The manager or taking legal action seems to be the only way to go. Manage Paul Alway nice but nothing get done as promised.always try to beleive in people BUT NOT OK and my health can not bear it any long.er

  9. John Stewart says:

The four standard warnings came on in my 2021 Honda CRV sensing systems. Once this happens the cruise control won’t engage. I was just driving along and the display went crazy including the brake warning light. I took it to Checkered Flag Honda where I bought it. Spent all day waiting for them to evaluate it.. The car only has 13,000 miles and is still like new. They determined that the sensor behind the grille has gone bad. They say it was damaged, but there is no sign of anything hitting the grille. It looks perfect. They say that my new car warranty won’t cover it. In my opinion Honda has a problem with these sensors failing and are trying to get out of standing behind them. I am very disappointed in Honda for these actions. I brought my car home unfixed. My wife and I are the only ones that drive the car and know for sure that nothing has ever hit the car. Our car is stored under a car port and has been babied since purchasing it new last April. That is why I started looking to see if there is any legal action against them.

    1. Glen B Alleman says:

We have experienced the same outcomes while driving our 2019 CRV on our paved rural road, with no traffic ahead. Taking the car to the dealer tomorrow. I’ve found reports in the web that the CMBS can be turned off.

  10. mike campa says:

My 2017 CRV locked up at about 35mph due to a false positive. In my case it was obvious to me that a large wet/shiny steel plate on the road was the reason for the lockup. Like many, no other traffic around and most luckily no one behind me. That day, I submitted the details to the NHTSA website.
