A Ford driver is suing the automaker alleging at least five Ford models are equipped with defective 10-speed transmissions.
Plaintiff Daniel McCabe recently filed the class action lawsuit against Ford Motor Co. in a Massachusetts federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.
According to the lawsuit, at least five models of Ford vehicles are equipped with 10-speed transmissions that cause the vehicles to jerk, shift harshly, lunge, clunk and hesitate between gears, Car Complaints reports.
The lawsuit also alleges the 10R80 transmissions can cause a sudden loss of power in 2017-2023 models of Ford Expedition, Ford Mustang, Ford Ranger, Ford F-150 and Lincoln Navigator.
McCabe is looking to represent anyone in the United States who formerly or currently own or leased one or more of these vehicles with a 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission.
McCabe said he leased a 2019 Ford Ranger with a 10R80 10-speed transmission in 2019. About seven months after he leased the Ranger, the 10R80 10-speed transmission started jerking and “held gears much longer than it should,” he alleges.
Ford has refused to recall the defective transmissions, lawsuit alleges
The class action lawsuit alleges Ford knew or should have known the transmissions contain defects.
McCabe says Ford failed to warn owners and lessees about the allegedly defective 10R80 transmissions, and now those vehicles are worth less than they should be.
“Because of the Defect, the Class Vehicles are likely to suffer serious damages and potentially catch fire if accidents occur, and there is an unreasonable and extreme risk of serious bodily harm or death to the vehicle’s occupants and others in the vicinity.”
The plaintiff seeks certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.
In March, Ford asked a federal judge in Michigan to dismiss a class action lawsuit revolving around claims it sold vehicles with an alleged defect that can cause them to roll away unexpectedly.
In 2022, Ford Motor Co. dealt with class action lawsuits, a class action settlement, a recall, a price hike, supply chain woes and a lawsuit of its own. Click here for more details.

68 thoughts onFord sued over alleged problems with 10-speed transmissions
I have a 2020 F150 purchased new in 2020. It has approximately 65k miles but it was having shift issues from new. The dealer Performance Ford told me that “they all do that and drive it for a while and it should go away, it because it is new and needs to settle in” . The conditions were it was hard shift between 1-2 and 2-3 when cold but when warmed up the problem disappeared. When cold the upshift from 1-2 and 2-3 was late, like it was in 1 gear hold up to about 2800 rpm. This was most of the time so I would let it warm up before going anywhere and the problem seemed less obvious. The symptoms remained throughout the warrentee period and now it never went away and actually got worse. Its getting to the point where it is acting up in other shifts and sometimes dragging up-shifts between 2-3, 3-4 mostly. It is hammering between the lower shifts 1-2, 2-3 so it is going to the dealer for diagnosis for $200.00. These 10R80 transmissions are prone to valve body seal and solenoid sticking issues. I am probably looking at probably $5000 to $9000 repair before I am done the dealer is saying. I see there are a huge number of complaints about this transmission that was put in several vehicles. since 2017. I am thinking that I should be part of a suit due to bad design by Ford. I own a 2018 F-150. Transmission failed on 12/29/2024 on I 20 near Florence,SC. Was able to get to the Ford dealership. Was told that the problem was the CDF drum clutch and that I needed a new transmission. The dealership installed a new transmission with a new updated CDF drum clutch. Cost was over $10,000 not including expense to get home to Spartanburg. Service rep said that they were rebuilding and replacing transmissions on several vehicles that had the same issue. Service rep said that Ford came out with a new and improved CDF drum clutch but never issued a recall. This was a very dangerous situation.
I would like to participate in this suit against Ford for the 10-speed transmission.
