ford air bagFord Motor Company has been hit with a class action lawsuit, issued by a vehicle owner who claims the 10R80 10-speed automatic transmissions in 2017-2020 Ford F-150 vehicles are defective.

Plaintiff Victor M. Orndorff says transmissions in the vehicles can “shift harshly and erratically causing the vehicle to jerk and hesitate between gears.”

Orndorff claims Ford vehicles need automatic transmissions to work properly so the cars can accelerate and decelerate properly.

The Ford class action lawsuit states that Orndorff purchased a 2018 F-150 Super Cab with 10-speed transmission from a dealership in Columbia, Pa. He says after driving his vehicle 6,000 miles, he noticed a “clunking” sound from the transmission.

Orndorff claims he brought the vehicle to the dealership, but was told there was nothing that could be done about the noise.

The Ford class action lawsuit argues that Ford knew about the defect in the automatic transmission in the F-150 vehicles but has refused to recall or replace the parts, stating the sudden shifting is normal.

Orndorff claims he did not know about the defect prior to purchasing the vehicle and would not have bought the F-150 if he had known. Ford did not disclose the transmission defect to Orndorff at the time of purchase, the class action lawsuit states.

In addition, Orndorff alleges that he and other potential Class Members have experienced a loss of money, property and value to their vehicles.

“The first priority of an auto manufacturer should be to ensure that its vehicles are safe and operate as intended to prevent or minimize the threat of death or serious bodily harm,” the Ford class action lawsuit states.

Ornsdorff claims that the auto manufacturer should take all the necessary steps to ensure the vehicles run as intended and inform vehicle owners of any defects that the vehicle may have, and remedy these defects. He added that vehicles are likely to suffer severe damages and may even catch fire if an accident occurs, due to the defect in the transmission.

The Ford class action lawsuit states that there have been other problems with F-150 trucks. In February 2019, Ford issued three recalls, one of which covered 1.48 million 2011-2013 F-150 trucks with six-speed automatic transmissions.

Orndorff says other Class Members have experienced the “clunking” noise when they start the engine, with one driver saying the noise was so loud, he thought he had been hit by another car. Some drivers have reported whiplash because of the rough and jarring shifting, according to the Ford class action lawsuit.

The Ford class action says the plaintiff would likely lease or purchase another F-150 in the future if the vehicle did not have the defect. He added that he would purchase or lease a F-150 again if a court issued an order to make the defendant comply with advertising and warranty laws.

I have 2018 Ford F-150 XLT 2.7 eco boost with the 10 speed transmission. It has been to the dealership 3 times. First time cleared adaptive learning data and it was ok for a week. Second time reprogrammed for TSB, it was good for a week, and this time they say it shifts harsh but within the normal Ford parameters. Only has 12,400 miles. The issues are intermittent, but I have video of when it messes up like most owners have stated. I live in Kentucky.

JERKING – HESITATING – SURGING – ENGINE LIGHT/WRENCH. I own a 2018 Ford F-150 XLT with Eco Boost and 10 speed transmission. I have 61,800 miles. I drove the truck 2 miles from my office last Friday when all hell broke loose! The pickup jerked violently, hesitated, surged and then lost power (coasting) followed by surging, violent down shift and then power. Felt like I was being hit from behind. Then a wrench icon appeared on the display screen and the check engine light came on. I pulled over, turned off the vehicle and then limped it home. One incident going home. On Monday, I took the pickup to a transmission shop and just got the call last night: P2700 code and mechanic says a new transmission needed. OF COURSE – the warranty ended at 60,000 miles and I have 61,800! I called Ford Customer Care and they can only consider claim if the pickup is at a Ford Certified Dealership. Truck being transported there tonight.

I have a 2017 ford F-150 it has 71,000 and was sent to dealership because of transmission issue. Dealership called and said we needed a entire new transmission $ 8000.00. The only thing covered was a roll pin problem that did not correct the problem.

2017 F-150, is at the shop waiting on a new transmission at 75,000 miles. Truck has been babied and meticulously maintained and now waiting on a $8000 repair!

2018 Ford F-150 Lariat with 10 speed transmission. Many of the same issues as reported, already had to have the transmission rebuilt with less than 20,000 miles. Rebuilt transmission is doing the same thing, Ford indicates nothing is wrong.

  6. Ken Carter says:

My 2017 Ford F-150 with the ten speed transmission sits at the dealership waiting for a new transmission. It died on the diagnostic ride with the technician. Trans was slipping and banging. Now I have to wait 4 to 6 weeks for a new transmission. I have just over 60,000 miles on the truck. Fortunately, I have an extended warranty from my credit union. I still am out of a car for 4 to 6 weeks. I have rented a car the last two weeks. This is after two weeks of diagnosing the problem and waiting for warranty approval. I also have replaced the leaf springs for creaking noises, the oil pump and the starter in the last year.

My 2018 F-150 3.5L XLT has been in the shop for the past week. It experienced severe loss of power and nearly cause multiple wrecks. There were no warning lights. The truck went stopped responding to acceleration. The tachometer was reading correctly. When pulling out onto street, it shifted from 1st to 4th and then seemed to fall out of gear. When trying to accelerate, the RPM was responsive, but the gear indicator flashed between 4th to 1st, back to 4th, 1st, 4th again and then jerked into 1st with traffic having to avoid me. Then as I was dropping off my daughter at school, the same situation occurred. This time I had to turn on my hazard lights and put it in park.

I drove straight to my Ford dealership where it has going to two weeks and paying out of pocket for rental cars and missing work. They said that the transmission needs to be replaced and was quoted 7500. The person handling the warranty is pushing the installation of a used transmission.

  8. Christopher Wallace says:

I purchased a 2018 f-150 slot in March of 2018. When cold transmission slams into 3rd gear from 1st. When I can manage to get trans to shift into 2nd from 1st, 2nd is a slipped gear. Tachometer rises and if I do not let up on gas slams into 2nd, then 4th and will not downshift when I stop. First year I addressed clunking noise with dealer to no avail. As of feb. 2022 my truck is going back to dealer for second time in a week with slipping and harsh shifts not corrected and now trans temperature reading incorrect. Vehicle is located in Staten Island N.Y.

  9. David says:

Definitely experienced this and taken to dealer to investigate only to have them say it’s normal or we found nothing wrong. 2019 F-150xlt.

  10. George whitney says:

I own a 2017 Ford F-150. The transmission shudders a lot and it has shifted down and and at times it shifts hard when putting it in reverse.
