ford air bagFord Motor Company has been hit with a class action lawsuit, issued by a vehicle owner who claims the 10R80 10-speed automatic transmissions in 2017-2020 Ford F-150 vehicles are defective.

Plaintiff Victor M. Orndorff says transmissions in the vehicles can “shift harshly and erratically causing the vehicle to jerk and hesitate between gears.”

Orndorff claims Ford vehicles need automatic transmissions to work properly so the cars can accelerate and decelerate properly.

The Ford class action lawsuit states that Orndorff purchased a 2018 F-150 Super Cab with 10-speed transmission from a dealership in Columbia, Pa. He says after driving his vehicle 6,000 miles, he noticed a “clunking” sound from the transmission.

Orndorff claims he brought the vehicle to the dealership, but was told there was nothing that could be done about the noise.

The Ford class action lawsuit argues that Ford knew about the defect in the automatic transmission in the F-150 vehicles but has refused to recall or replace the parts, stating the sudden shifting is normal.

Orndorff claims he did not know about the defect prior to purchasing the vehicle and would not have bought the F-150 if he had known. Ford did not disclose the transmission defect to Orndorff at the time of purchase, the class action lawsuit states.

In addition, Orndorff alleges that he and other potential Class Members have experienced a loss of money, property and value to their vehicles.

“The first priority of an auto manufacturer should be to ensure that its vehicles are safe and operate as intended to prevent or minimize the threat of death or serious bodily harm,” the Ford class action lawsuit states.

Ornsdorff claims that the auto manufacturer should take all the necessary steps to ensure the vehicles run as intended and inform vehicle owners of any defects that the vehicle may have, and remedy these defects. He added that vehicles are likely to suffer severe damages and may even catch fire if an accident occurs, due to the defect in the transmission.

The Ford class action lawsuit states that there have been other problems with F-150 trucks. In February 2019, Ford issued three recalls, one of which covered 1.48 million 2011-2013 F-150 trucks with six-speed automatic transmissions.

Orndorff says other Class Members have experienced the “clunking” noise when they start the engine, with one driver saying the noise was so loud, he thought he had been hit by another car. Some drivers have reported whiplash because of the rough and jarring shifting, according to the Ford class action lawsuit.

The Ford class action says the plaintiff would likely lease or purchase another F-150 in the future if the vehicle did not have the defect. He added that he would purchase or lease a F-150 again if a court issued an order to make the defendant comply with advertising and warranty laws.

I have a 2020 F150 and I am having the same issue. Actually my truck is in the shop as I type this. This is the second time for the same issue. Of course they can’t get it to do it at the dealer. It shifts very hard when you get in it to pass someone like it drops a gear and then shifts back up. My brothers truck did the same thing and he had it in the shop several times and they could not fix it. Finally , while he was out in the highway it blew all the seals out of the transmission. So beware of being stuck on the road. The dealer told him it was not their issue. He contacted Corporate and it has now been fixed with and extra 50,000 mike bumper to bumper warranty for his inconvenience. I will be I. Contact with corporate regarding mine if they do not get it right. But sure add me in the list of others for the lawsuit. It’s ridiculous.

I have had a new replacement engine and now in the shop with same tranny issues. Hard shifting 1-3 gears and it has delayed shifts in the night 6-7 gears. Scary as hell when it delays then slams into gear.. Been at the dealership for a month now.

I have an ’18 F150 with a 3.5 EcoBoost 10 speed. It is currently in the shop being scheduled to be worked on for the last month. It still has not even been seen by a technician yet here I am making payments on a truck siting in a lot.

Very disappointed with my Ford F-150 . It snaps when I start it (loudly) . When ever I start to slow down it snaps and pops when going into lower gears . Same thing when starting to accelerate from a stop. When I took it to the dealership twice they told me both times that nothing was wrong. I swore by Ford trucks before, but don’t know if I would buy another one

We have a 2020 F150 with the 10R80 10 speed transmission we bought in Nov. of 2020. It has 12,000mi. The problems started with it showing being in park or reverse or neutral and being in some other gear. Then without the battery actually being dead the truck lost all power while being park on a hill. It disengaged itself from park somehow and almost ran over my husband. I jumped in and stomped on the brake since there was no way to engage the stupid e-brake being there was no power to the vehicle and most new vehicles don’t have a manual emergency brake anymore. Then while towing our pontoon boat, in tow mode it started jerking hard through the gears. At one point it jerked so hard it said the trailer had disconnected. My husband thought he had been hit. He stopped, checked the trailer connections but everything was fine. Then service lights came on dash and the truck lost most of it’s gears including reverse. It was towed to the dealer July 26th. The transmission was blown apart. Ford did not want to replace it even though the technician felt it was past rebuild. The dealer ordered parts and got held up on and handful of seals. Eventually Ford relented and allowed the dealer to order a new transmission. Upon receiving and installing the new transmission they found the torque converter was bad. We are now on terminal hold waiting for the part to arrive. It’s been in the shop for 6 weeks at this point. Honestly I’ve wanted to submit under the lemon law. I don’t think the return of our purchase price is sufficient since what we paid new is now not what it would cost to replace it in this insane market. I think the truck has been devalued and we’ve been making payments on something we don’t have use of not to mention warrantied months it sits in the shop we don’t get back. Our dealer has been great in giving us a vehicle to drive but I think Ford needs to step up and pay back replacement cost.

Email sent to the Cavalier Ford, Chesapeake VA, Jul 27th 2021

I have a critical safety issue with the 2016 F150 truck I bought from Cavalier.
The issue is the 6R80 automatic transmission unexpectedly changes gears while
driving. In my case the truck down shifted from high gear to low gear on the
interstate while driving about 70 miles per hour. I was fortunate no other cars
were near me. This occurred the week on Jul 6 2021. It has occurred multiple times
since than as well. I had the battery checked, showed bad, and bought a new one
Jul 9th. I also had the “Check Engine” light scanned at Autozone.
It revealed codes P0706/707, ie Range Sensor inside the transmission.
I called Cavalier for an appt (Aug 11th almost a month away!!!),
informed it would be $140 for a diagnostic!! It was free at Autozone,
and I also had another free scan done at Logan’s Auto repair on Jul 22nd,
that revealed codes P0702/705/706/707/1921, all pointing to the Range sensor
in the tranny. I spoke with Cavalier representative Nicole on Jul 16th, no help,
and also left Service Mgr. Cathy Hunt. a voicemail on Jul 23rd explaining
my dilemma. She has not returned my call.
My status now, I have a 2016 F150 Ford truck, I urgently need to work and
daily errands, ie Grandkids. There was a recall on this issue on the
2011/12 F150s. How come not now, its a major safety issue,
and I see a lot of these trucks around. I wanted to convey this to Ms Hunt.
Summary…the motor in this truck blew up at approx 39000 miles,
and Ford did replace it. Now, at 79000 miles the transmission is also gone out.
Since my extended warranty of 75000 just expired, I need some assistance from either
Cavalier or the Ford Mortor Co. I need a reliable truck for work and taking care
of the grandkids. If no one has reached out to me my COB Jul 28th 2021,
a complaint will be sent in to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

UPDATE Aug 12th 2021—finally after waiting over a month for a diagnostic appt with
the Ford dealership, I personally had my truck towed in. Fortunately, I had a
Check Engine light displayed, and it did reveal digital codes saying that the
Range sensor on the Lead Frame was malfunctioning. The dealership checked with the
Ford Co, and they agreed to cover 50% of the replacement cost…total cost over
$1200, and NO rental vehicle reimbursement. However, whats a person to do if
they need transportation on a daily basis. I’ve been without the truck since
this issue started, and now the Lead Frame part is back ordered another
10 days (Aug26th), meaning another 2 weeks without my truck. When I do get it back,
I’m not sure if the truck is a safe vehicle with this transmission design in it.

So, I am interested in becoming part of a lawsuit to see if we can get more done
    from the Ford Motor Co.

    Thank you
