ford air bagFord Motor Company has been hit with a class action lawsuit, issued by a vehicle owner who claims the 10R80 10-speed automatic transmissions in 2017-2020 Ford F-150 vehicles are defective.

Plaintiff Victor M. Orndorff says transmissions in the vehicles can “shift harshly and erratically causing the vehicle to jerk and hesitate between gears.”

Orndorff claims Ford vehicles need automatic transmissions to work properly so the cars can accelerate and decelerate properly.

The Ford class action lawsuit states that Orndorff purchased a 2018 F-150 Super Cab with 10-speed transmission from a dealership in Columbia, Pa. He says after driving his vehicle 6,000 miles, he noticed a “clunking” sound from the transmission.

Orndorff claims he brought the vehicle to the dealership, but was told there was nothing that could be done about the noise.

The Ford class action lawsuit argues that Ford knew about the defect in the automatic transmission in the F-150 vehicles but has refused to recall or replace the parts, stating the sudden shifting is normal.

Orndorff claims he did not know about the defect prior to purchasing the vehicle and would not have bought the F-150 if he had known. Ford did not disclose the transmission defect to Orndorff at the time of purchase, the class action lawsuit states.

In addition, Orndorff alleges that he and other potential Class Members have experienced a loss of money, property and value to their vehicles.

“The first priority of an auto manufacturer should be to ensure that its vehicles are safe and operate as intended to prevent or minimize the threat of death or serious bodily harm,” the Ford class action lawsuit states.

Ornsdorff claims that the auto manufacturer should take all the necessary steps to ensure the vehicles run as intended and inform vehicle owners of any defects that the vehicle may have, and remedy these defects. He added that vehicles are likely to suffer severe damages and may even catch fire if an accident occurs, due to the defect in the transmission.

The Ford class action lawsuit states that there have been other problems with F-150 trucks. In February 2019, Ford issued three recalls, one of which covered 1.48 million 2011-2013 F-150 trucks with six-speed automatic transmissions.

Orndorff says other Class Members have experienced the “clunking” noise when they start the engine, with one driver saying the noise was so loud, he thought he had been hit by another car. Some drivers have reported whiplash because of the rough and jarring shifting, according to the Ford class action lawsuit.

The Ford class action says the plaintiff would likely lease or purchase another F-150 in the future if the vehicle did not have the defect. He added that he would purchase or lease a F-150 again if a court issued an order to make the defendant comply with advertising and warranty laws.

I have a 2018 Ford F150 with the 10 speed transmission in it. It started to shift gears and make a caveating sounds between 3rd and 5th gear and as the transmission warned up to operating temperature going down the highway it would make the sounds again and down shift a couple gears while making this sound. I researched the web and found out that other people were having the same problems with this transmission. I carried my truck back to my Ford dealer and they said there wasn’t anything they could do to fix the problem. I went back to the web and found out you could turn off the computer control to the transmission, so I carried it back to my dealer and told them I wanted the computer turned off and they told me they couldn’t do that. I ask why and they didn’t even know you could do that. I told them to go into the program and look and where to find it off switch. They did and they turned it off but it didn’t fix the problem completely. I did inform them I wanted a new transmission that wasn’t connected to a computer and they said they couldn’t replace my transmission.
I did talk to another fellow there and he said all of this was mandated by the US government to get better gas milage, I get 18 mpg in town and 20 on the highway which is the same mpg as my friend with the old 6 speed transmission.

I have a 2011 F150, over the years I have experienced the loud clunking every now and again. It wasn’t until a couple weeks ago, I had the failure described in the technical bulletin. Of course they extended the power train warranty to 150K miles. Of course the first time my vehicle failed with the symptoms, aka would not shift, speedometer went to 0, then big wrench on screen. My truck is at 151K miles. I called customer service and they said, sucks to be you! Seems to me there should have been a recall on this issue not a technical bulletin that just allowed you to press your luck a little longer. The molded lead frame will only cost $1900 to fix. Because I chose not to use ford at $2700. I love my truck and that is why I am willing to pay to fix, but done with Ford at this point.

  5. John Heaney says:

My name is John Heaney I own a 2018 Ford F150 king ranch I’ve had nothing but problems with the transmission now it has catastrophic failure at 75,809 miles the dealer states after $1080 diagnostic that they can’t fix it and that they only recommend to fix is to put in a new transmission at $8000. This is a serious problem that is life-threatening to the owners of these vehicles with this transmission I’m sure I’m not the only one that is purchased a vehicle in Pennsylvania. Mine was purchased at Koch Ford in Easton Pennsylvania when confronted with the class action lawsuits they said that I would have to contact for direct. They tried to show me that there wasn’t any recalls on my particular truck concerning that issue. Personally, I think because of the technology today, that if we were to obtain all of, the service records of the dealership and any other dealership that is experienced the same problem that may be something will be done the NTSB needs to addresses the attorney generals office, consumer affairs, division needs to addresses the Better Business Bureau needs to address this but if you and any other owners are experiencing the same trouble and returned to the dealer and they are in denial over the problem. They can be put on the stand and they can be asked had the ever experience the same problem before if they lie it’s perjury and that’s criminal if the service records indicate when they sign off on it , but they have had numerous complaints about about the 1080 R transmission 10 speed and they were aware of it but continue to tell the owners of those vehicles that it wasn’t covered that in itself is perjury I would like to join the lawsuit. I counted how many people are claiming this exact same problem on your page and I’m counting 109 people, it’s my intentions to get in touch with the attorney generals office, the consumer affairs division, the Better Business Bureau and the NTSB so that this serious and life-threatening condition does not cause someone their lives. Ford is aware of the problem but yet they’re in denial of the problem and something needs to be done before someone loses their life.

We purchased a brand new 2017 Ford F-150 in December of 2017, with the 10R80 transmission. The first incident of sudden lurching forward while pulling into the garage could have had very bad consequences. Dec. 2022 (2 days before end of extended warranty) started having severe transmission problems. Would not go into reverse without going through park first, hard jerks during shifting, sudden loss of power while driving, and was bad smell coming from bottom of vehicle. Of course, Ford could not get it in to diagnose. Found a local shop that diagnosed the problem & submitted repair quote to replace the valve body following Ford’s TSB. Work completed 12/14/2022. TSB work did not fix the problem. Now the torque converter is throwing codes and the tranny shutters all the time. With 11 monthly payments remaining, the truck is currently undriveable. It seems the only option is buying a new 10R80 with all of the bugs fixed. Have 2 quotes, both about $7200 including labor.

    1. Eric Aparicio says:

I have a similar problem. It occurred 2,000 miles out of my extended warranty. Ford dealer is currently quoting me $9,000+ to completely replace the transmission. I also have about 11 monthly payments left with a truck that is undriveable

  7. Michaela and Kevin Mills says:

2018 f150, bought new, now hard shifts from gears 1-2. Truck showed at being in gear 4, while at a stop, rpms went up and truck was not moving, fear of this happening at an intersection could be fatal as I enter the highway from my home.ford dealer claims they can’t duplicate or diagnose an issue, safety concerns were dismissed by Ford service department.

  8. Jerry Kaschak says:

I own a 2013 Ford Raptor, on November 14th 2022 my vehicle dropped down into 1st gear from 50 mph locked up the tires and I slid over to the side of the road. Wrench light was on and it was acting very strange. Shut the truck off limped home and brought it to the dealer on November 16th. They said they have a recall on the programming and they would fix it up. Well that did not fix anything so they told me they need to replace the lead frame. Been waiting on a part since November 20, 2022 and as of February 6th I’m still waiting . No one can tell me when the part will arrive. I’ve been renting a car since November 16th due to Fords inability to get this Lead frame part.

  9. Elias Gutierrez says:

We purchased a 2020 Ford Expedition Limited Max, our transmission is the same 10R80 that is having all the same issues above. Lurching forward, sudden and dangerous down shifting, sudden loss of power while driving, hard jerks causing whiplash, gears slipping during acceleration, grinding noise from transmission, bad smell coming from bottom of vehicle.

  10. Fred Garey says:

2019 F-150 Lariet 4×4 crew cab. Bought new and at the 6,000 miles it suddenly downshifted into 1st gear while doing 60 MPH. Took to dealer and “no problem found”. Since then I have experiences hard shifts especially around 3rd gear. Been to dealer three more times and was fianally told “that’ the way they are”. I have had such hard down shifts into 1st that I too thought the car behind me hit me. I am concerned that a hard unexpected downshift on an icy road in Colorado would cause me to lose control of the vehicle. This IS a serious safety issue.
