A 2019 Toyota Supra owner says that repairs on the recently reintroduced vehicle take an unreasonable amount of time, more than six months in his case, in a class action lawsuit lodged against the carmaker last week.

Lead plaintiff Mitchell Bazzano wants to represent Maryland late model Supra owners who he says are left without vehicles for an unreasonable amount of time due to a lack of parts and training at Toyota repair shops. Bazzano accuses Toyota of failing to disclose to prospective customers that 2019 and later model Supra vehicles are equipped with a chassis, transmission, and engine made by BMW. Further, the vehicle has been subject to multiple recalls, compounding repair issues for late model Supra owners, claims the plaintiff.

Bazzano claims that he overpaid to the tune of $50,000 for a 2019 Supra. He says that he and other Supra owners would not have purchased or paid as much for the vehicle had they known that repairs would be subject to “excessive delays” — more than six months, in the plaintiff’s case.

The Supra, originally manufactured by Toyota between 1978 and 2002, surged in popularity after the car was featured in The Fast and the Furious, along with the film’s sequel, 2 Fast and 2 Furious, according to Auto Week. Toyota reintroduced the Supra in 2019, but used BMW components, says the class action lawsuit.

“The Toyota dealerships who sold or leased the vehicles presently lack the parts, equipment, and general familiarity with non-Toyota engines and transmissions, which are necessary to address the issues related to this vehicle and for general issues related to the vehicle,” alleges the 2019 Supra class action lawsuit.

Further, the 2019 Supra and later models have been subject to numerous recalls, including for the radio, seatbelt and rear camera failures, headlight malfunctions and steering problems, notes the plaintiff.

“While these issues are significant in themselves, they are compounded by the wait times experienced by Supra owners, unable to have their cars serviced within reasonable amounts of time,” states the 2019 Supra class action lawsuit.

Bazzano accuses Toyota of negligent misrepresentation and fraud when it comes to the 2019 and later models of the Supra, as well as breach of contract and warranty, and violating Maryland consumer protection laws.

The plaintiff wants Toyota to pay a Class of Maryland 2019 and later Supra owners damages and also cover attorney fees and court costs.
