2021 Porsche sports cars recalled due to loose suspension components that can detach

Porsche’s latest luxury electric vehicle, the Taycan, is facing a recall due to loose suspension components that can detach, increasing the risk of a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued the recall on its website on March 10, which affects the entire 2021 Taycan family, as well as some 202 versions of the Cayman, 911, Boxster, and 718 Spyder models.

Despite covering almost an entire 2021 Porsche sports car lineup, the recall only concerns 396 affected units, the NHTSA said.

The owners will have to take their vehicles back to their dealers for repairs, which will consist of replacing the threaded connections with a new nut and bolt, tightened to the correct specification.

The NHTSA Safety Recall Report said Porsche was informed on Feb. 9 that certain screw connections at the subject vehicle’s suspension might not have been tightened according to specification.

Two weeks later, the issue was presented to the Porsche product safety committee with its first results of internal worst-case tests showing a minimum mileage of 20,000 km without the screw connection might fail.

“The product safety committee has commissioned to find out what might happen after 20,000 km to better understand the potential safety implications,” the report said. The recall was decided out of an abundance of caution.

The recall concerns the entire 2021 Taycan family, including the base model, 4S, Turbo, and Turbo S. It also affects the coupe versions of the 2021 911 Carrera, S, 4S, Turbo, and Turbo S, as well as the convertible 911 Carrera, S, 4S, Turbo, and Turbo S, and the 4S Targa and 4S Targa Heritage Design Edition.

The 2021 Cayman, Cayman T, Cayman S, Cayman GT4, 718 Spyder, and Boxster are also affected.

The German automobile manufacturer said drivers would not necessarily have any warning of the issue, although abnormal noises might be heard due to components moving around.

Dealers and customers will be notified by May 9, and repairs will be provided for free. Depending on the inspection result, all damaged parts will be replaced, Porsche said.

Owners may contact Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243, quoting the recall number AMA3.

Porsche does not currently face legal action over the pasta products, but Top Class Actions tracks recalls because they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Porsche is currently facing a range of class action lawsuits. A February class action alleges thousands of Porsches’ “infotainment” systems have been permanently damaged by failed software update, while a January class action alleges Porsche manipulated and deceived consumers about the emissions and fuel efficiency of its cars.

And last year, customers alleged that the engine cooling systems in some Porsche vehicles are defective, leading to expensive repairs.
