repairman fixing refrigeratorA substantial number of consumers have reported their Kenmore refrigerator not cooling with products purchased after January 29th, 2014. These complaints include Kenmore refrigerators that have been sold under the LG brand.

On the average, a refrigerator should operate satisfactorily for 13 years; LG itself claims that its products should last at least 20 years. According to a recent class action lawsuit, these Kenmore and LG refrigerators may stop working properly after 2 to 4 years.

If you purchased an LG or Kenmore refrigerator since Jan. 30th, 2014, you may be eligible to join the current legal action against these manufacturers.

The Reason for the Kenmore Refrigerator Not Cooling

According to plaintiffs, the problem stems from a defective linear compressor. A compressor is the central component in any refrigeration unit, whether it be the the refrigerator in your kitchen or your automobile’s air conditioning.

The compressor is essentially a pump; its purpose is to draw the refrigerant gas (either Freon or HFC-134a) inside, where it is pressurized and forced into the condenser. This is what causes cooling to occur.

Normally, a compressor is belt-driven; refrigerators would have a small motor with a belt that would cause the compressor to operate at only one speed, with a thermostat to turn it on and off as necessary.

The linear compressor used in LG and Kenmore units operates somewhat differently. It is a type of “digital inverter” compressor that operates more like the throttle of a gasoline engine that runs constantly at lower, but variable speeds. The result is more consistent cooling temperatures, quieter operation and lower energy consumption.

Unfortunately, refrigerator owners report that these linear compressors have been subject to premature failure.

Did the Company Know About the Defect?

Plaintiffs in the current class action lawsuit believe that the manufacturer had reason to know that the linear compressor responsible for the Kenmore refrigerator not cooling was defective and had a duty to notify the public.

This claim is based on thousands of complaints that have been posted to online forums as well as the LG website itself. Plaintiffs say that had they been aware of the problem, they would not have purchased LG or Kenmore products.

It is not the first time that Kenmore and LG refrigerators have had problems. In 2005, Sears, Roebuck and Co. recalled approximately 20,000 3-door refrigerators sold under the LG and Kenmore Elite brand names. According to a report from Consumer Affairs, the condenser fan motor contained a faulty component that could cause a short circuit. The result was overheating of the fan motor, which posed a serious fire danger.

LG Responds

In a communication to Digital Trends, an LG company representative said, “At LG, consumer satisfaction is paramount…LG models featuring linear compressors come with an industry-leading 10-year parts warranty and five-year labor warranty.”

Meanwhile, consumers who had their Kenmore refrigerator not cooling say they’re out the cost of spoiled food and in many cases, suffered damage to their kitchen floors because of leakage. Plaintiffs claim violations of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, breach of express (written) and implied warranty, and unjust enrichment.

  1. Shannon Tompkins says:

Bought ours in 2016 and stopped cooling this week, lost all of the food in there. Luckily the repair guy that came out said this is a known issue and don’t waste the time or money, it is most certainly the compressor. He said he refuses to work on these products, they have terrible tech service even for the person trying to fix it and cost so much to fix it isn’t worth it. How do i get in the Class Action Lawsuit? For an appliance to only last 3 1/2 years is crazy!

Did you find the info for the class action because I bought mine in 2016 and it gave out last week as well

My three-year-old Kenmore Elite compressor quit working. I’ve been told by Sears repair that the compressor will be free but labor etc. will cost me over $700 dollars. I’ve been without a refrigerator for 2 weeks now and had to rent one. How can I join this lawsuit?

  3. Kevin Metschuleit says:

I Purchased my Kenmore Elite Refrigerator in 2017 Repair Man just left and said the Compressor is out called Sears again and complained now have to pay labor and wait for a new Compressor. I will never buy another kenmore junk.

We bought our grab-n-go kenmore refrigerator in 2015, fast forward a little over 3 years later water all over the floor, opened the freezer and it was room temp. Called sears it was going to be over 1k fixed and you could use the dinky coupon if you waited a week for their staff to fix it, so we then schedule for them to come out (heres the best part) they dont show and offer 50 bucks for the missed appt. And wanted me to wait another 2 weeks, so I hired a contractor whom fixed it for 700 so I was out that and 200 in food. All I asked was they give me the coupon difference back (20 percent) back since they couldnt follow through with repairs and they flat out refused and threatened legal action after I warned other customers of this lawsuit. Needless to say I cant wait till kenmore goes bankrupt and all their products are only good for shelving and that’s about it.

  5. David L Lifford says:

I’ve had the repair man out 4 months ago and he replaced my compressor and put in a new board on my Kenmore Elite and now 4 months later it quit cooling again. The new guy recharged the compressor and said the first guy didn’t fully charge it, I said BS. It cost me a refrigerator full of food and another $402.00. He told me to buy another refrigerator that this one is junk. Screw them I will sue the hell out of them if they think I’m paying 3k and I’m just going to walk away. When you call you get the run around and I’m not playing that game. Has anyone heard anything or got any resolution from Sears yet ?

  6. Robin Parker McCurley says:

We have a Kenmore model 795.72493.611. Bought in 2017. Warranty ran out in December of 2019. A technician says the compressor is gone. We are stuck. Repair is going to be expensive plus the price of the compressor. I understand that the compressors that are replaced fail again. Please count us in.

  7. Tony says:

Have a Kenmore Elite that was purchased in 2016. Compressor is faulty and needs to be replaced. LG will not cover it under their new warranty (5years parts and labor covered) even though it was manufactures by them. Sears will only cover parts but not labor. Sears should take care of their customers just as LG has.

    1. Nancy naser says:

I also bought mine in 2016 and have been without a fridge for almost two months now I paid for labor so they can fix it for me they changed two compressors and evaporators the technician said it had a major contamination seal burnout leak and it’s not reparable and until now they are not replacing it for me even though we are going through a major disaster with the corona virus and we really need a fridge they just don’t care.

  8. Irene Cordova says:

My Kenmore/LG refrigerator compressor and other parts went out. I bought this brand new fridge in 2018. It will cost me over $700 to fix it and no I do not have a warranty. Please let me know how to get into this Class Action Suit.

  9. Ayda MacDuff says:

My Kenmore Elite just stopped working. After performing diagnostics it was determined that it was the compressor.

  10. Jaclynn Sandoval says:

I bought my Kenmore Elite in 2015 and it completely went out and stopped cooling. I would like to be included in this class action law suit.
