A man repairs a refrigerator.Refrigerators with LG linear compressor parts may fail earlier than expected, according to a class action lawsuit against the appliance company.

When consumers spend money on appliances, they assume that these expensive purchases will last a long time. For some appliances like freezers, consumers may only need to purchase a replacement every 20 years. For more frequently used appliances like refrigerators, consumers can reportedly expect their appliance to last between 10 and 18 years.

In a refrigerator, a compressor is the key component that helps cool the inside and keep food at the desired temperature. The compressor draws in liquid refrigerant and then subjects the liquid to extreme pressure – compressing the liquid and increasing the temperature. This turns the refrigerant into a gas.

Once the compressor converts refrigerant fluid into a gas, the gas is pushed through metal coils which allow the heat to be dispersed. Later on in the process, the gas is turned back into a liquid, absorbs heat from the evaporator coils, and is transported back to the compressor. Then, the process starts again. This continues until the refrigerator is at the desired temperature.

Problems Reported with the LG Linear Compressor

Despite the understanding that appliances will last a long time, plaintiffs in the LG class action lawsuit allege LG refrigerators reportedly fail as early as 36 months after purchasing.

According to the LG refrigerator class action, LG linear compressor components are defective which causes refrigerators to be unable to cool effectively. As a result, the food stored by customers allegedly goes bad. Plaintiffs in the LG class action argue that consumers have not gotten their money’s worth due to the defective nature of the refrigerator compressor.

“There is a lot of frustrations surrounding the failures when they occur,” the lead attorney told WMBF News. “People expect their refrigerators to last, I think, around 10 years. It’s a major household appliance, like a stove, and people rely on them to keep their food cold. But what we alleged in the complaint is when the compressor fails, the refrigerator can’t cool the food anymore and people are really left to live out of a cooler until an authorized repair person can get out and fix the unit, which could be weeks.”

When an LG linear compressor fails, consumers are forced to wait for a trained LG repair person to come to their home and diagnose the issue. While their LG refrigerator isn’t working, their food may spoil and they may be forced to spend money on eating out and replacing food. Even after this, consumers are reportedly forced to pay hundreds of dollars to fix the issue due to the costs of parts and labor.

LG reportedly cannot comment on legal matters, but said in a statement to WMBF News that “customer satisfaction is key priority at LG.”

“Our home appliances are enjoyed by millions of Americans every day, and we’re proud that our products are recognized by industry experts for their reliability and that LG has been awarded more JD Power Awards for customer satisfaction than any other appliance manufacturer,” the company stated.

    1. Shauwn says:

Had the same issue with Kenmore. Probably the same linear compressor that’s in the LG. What’s the point in having a fancy refrigerator if it can’t even provide the basic function it’s supposed to do.

  6. Angela says:

LG refrigerator , lies and slap on the face of the consumer. 10 years warranty ?! My refrigerator bought on May 2015 stopped working, now I have a useless stainless steel cabinet. Why do they put electronics and made the appliances energy efficient only to break down in few years? Lies, and no one cares, I tried to find someone to come and look at it, and no one wants to work on LG or with LG. I am in Chicago and you’ll think that it would be easy to find someone in such a big city. I am so frustrated, how to I join the class action lawsuit?

How do I join the Class action lawsuit? My Kenmore Elite (LG) model 74025 purchased in February 2016 has stopped cooling May, 2020 has all the earmarks of the defective linear compressor. Unit has power can hear a motor running but not cooling. Ran through some troubleshooting steps with Sears today no change. Because of information posted by others I have great help and will insist on the full part replacement to help avoid another failure. Also $300 claim for food spoilage help some not all. Also parts AND labor on info for LG’s reported response to the pending Class action. This site doesn’t take you to a link to add your name so I see others have left their request in this comment section. Please contact me at regarding joining lawsuit. Thank you.
