Honda Civic tire wear class action settlement

Honda Motor Co. has reached a class action settlement over claims that some of its vehicles excessively burned oil, causing engine misfiring and premature spark plug degradation. If you purchased a  2008-2012 Honda Accord, 2008-2013 Honda Odyssey, 2009-2013 Honda Pilot, 2010-2011 Honda Accord Crosstour or 2012 Honda Crosstour equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with Variable Cylinder Management (“VCM-2”), you could be eligible to receive compensation for repairs or a warranty extension.

The Honda engine misfire settlement will resolve a class action lawsuit (Soto, et al. v. Honda Motor Co. Inc.) alleging that Honda manufactured more than 1.5 million defective vehicles that excessively burned oil.

Honda has denied the allegations in the class action lawsuit. The parties agree that there are no safety concerns with the vehicles named in the litigation. Honda agreed to the class action settlement in order to avoid the costs of a trial. The proposed class action settlement was preliminarily approved by U.S. District Judge Susan Illston on Oct. 9, 2013.

To receive full compensation for your vehicle repairs, Class Members must submit a valid Claim Form with a copy of an original repair invoice or receipt plus proof of payments for repairs or replacement of parts on a Settlement Class Vehicle by April 10, 2014. Class Members do not need to take any action to obtain the warranty extension, which will cover repairs for the affected vehicles within eight years of the original purchase or lease date of the vehicle, with no mileage limitation.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members of the Honda engine defect class action settlement include all current and former owners or lessees of one or more of the following Honda vehicles equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with Variable Cylinder Management (“VCM-2”), purchased or leased in the United States:

  • 2008-2012 Honda Accord
  • 2008-2013 Honda Odyssey
  • 2009-2013 Honda Pilot

  1. Taylor says:

My 2012 Honda Pilot has been having these problems for almost a year now. The first time it was misfiring, I took it to a shop and they fixed it. Almost immediately, it misfired again. And then so did two more. So we replaced all of the coils and spark plugs. Maybe a few weeks later, they all misfired again. So we replaced them all again. Almost immediately, they all misfired again. That makes THREE times we have replaced it with no luck. My car runs so bad, shakes like crazy, doesnt accelerate, burns oil like no other, and I have to leave the AC off (even though the weather is in the high 90s right now) for my car to run decent enough to take it anywhere. The other day, I turned on the AC in a drive thru because it was so hot, and the moment I put my car in drive to leave, it died. I called the Honda dealership closest to me about it after I had read about this recall/lawsuit and after looking up my VIN, said that I dont have a recall for it so there’s nothing they can do. Is this real??? Like are they really not going to pay to fix it even though there is a WHOLE lawsuit about it, and my car has every single symptom stated in the lawsuit?? How did y’all get the dealership to pay for even 75% because it looks like they are going to be no help, and I am not going to pay $4500 for something I shouldn’t have to.

    1. Dash says:

If you find out, let me know!! I just had this problem start yesterday (2010 Honda Accord Coupe). I was one a few months passed the 8 year cut-off for the extended warranty to have helped. The dealership won’t budge on the $3000 repair costs, ridiculous.

  2. Dan says:

This is a common problem in 4-cylinder engines as well.

  3. LaToya Townsend says:

My 2010 honda accord is having a misfire problem..is there any help that i can get..i need my vehicle..we only have one car…ive already replaced alot of stuff only to have the same problem..please help

    1. Charles Landreth says:

I am now going through it Ibought the car in last part of august 2018 and pretty much my warranty extesnion was expired and I am on my own 2010 honda accord with a v6. dealership repair to replace rings on 3 cylinders 2300

  4. Jeremiah says:

My 2014 Honda Odyssey has been experiencing this issue for the last 8 months or so. Even though it’s the same engine, same oil rings, Honda is refusing to repair it properly. Every 4-6 weeks i have to pull the fouled plug in Cyl 1 and replace it. Today Cyl 3 plug finally had to be replaced as well. Loyal Honda customer for over 20 years. Employee for 13. I’ve owned 5 Odysseys, 2 Accords, 2 Acura Integras, 1 Acura Vigor, 1 Honda RIdgeline, 1 Honda CBR, 1 Honda lawnmower. But I may now be moving on to another brand as I continue to deal with the issue.

    1. Brett Griffith says:

I have the same issue. Cylinder number 3.

  5. Connie says:

My Honda Pilot just presented with the misfiring issue for the first time. Despite being beyond the 8 year extension period as a result of the lawsuit, Honda picked up the tab for 75% of the repairs ($3000). I had to argue to get a loaner from them. After 20 years as a loyal customer. I’ve lost trust in the brand. They were not forthcoming nor transparent with the litigation and existing issues, I discovered it on my own after much research and confronting them.

    1. Jennifer says:

How did you get Honda to cover part of the repair????

    2. Brittany says:

How did you get help with coverage, same problem with a 2010 Honda Pilot and quoted 4700 to repair.

  6. Bill says:

My Honda pilot had this done at 37,000 miles. It’s been done a second time at 120,000 miles. The vehicle is eight years and three months old. I shouldn’t have to pay for any of this, but at least Honda is picking up 75%

  7. Juan Carlos Ramirez says:

I just spent $1000 in tune up and replacing 6 ignition coil + labor. My car is a Honda Odyssey 2012, does Honda would cover these expenses? any help out there? thank you!

  8. Melissa White says:

my 2010 Honda Accord V-6 , is starting to misfire, due to this settlement, how can i get my car fixed. I started off with one misfiring, replaced the coil, and now another is starting to misfire. Also am i going to get a rental to get me back and forth to work?

    1. LaToya says:

Hello …did anyone help you with this problem

    2. Charles Landreth says:

send the car down the road

  9. Bob H says:

My 2010 4 cylinder Accord has the same issue with excessive oil burning. Is there a separate class action suit for 4 cylinder models?

  10. Tom dickson says:

Check Honda service bulletin 13-081 for vehicles 2011-2013. Free ring replacement 1-3 or 1-4. Check vin number; phone 888-888-3082. Google and you can read full service bulletin. Dated 1-20-2015. Diag. Cylinder misfire

    1. Dana S says:

Such crap. My car is in the shop for repairs and I’m carless. Dealer nor Honda will provide a rental. Anyone have luck getting one?

      1. Evan says:

Engine in our 2012 Pilot locked up this week. We bought it PRE owned/certified in 2014 and have had several issues since.

Honda’s service has been great until now. We struggled to make the dealership file a claim and pursue Honda USA for a new motor. Unfortunately, After all the money spent through Honda we are still getting the runaround.
