Honda Civic tire wear class action settlement

Honda Motor Co. has reached a class action settlement over claims that some of its vehicles excessively burned oil, causing engine misfiring and premature spark plug degradation. If you purchased a  2008-2012 Honda Accord, 2008-2013 Honda Odyssey, 2009-2013 Honda Pilot, 2010-2011 Honda Accord Crosstour or 2012 Honda Crosstour equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with Variable Cylinder Management (“VCM-2”), you could be eligible to receive compensation for repairs or a warranty extension.

The Honda engine misfire settlement will resolve a class action lawsuit (Soto, et al. v. Honda Motor Co. Inc.) alleging that Honda manufactured more than 1.5 million defective vehicles that excessively burned oil.

Honda has denied the allegations in the class action lawsuit. The parties agree that there are no safety concerns with the vehicles named in the litigation. Honda agreed to the class action settlement in order to avoid the costs of a trial. The proposed class action settlement was preliminarily approved by U.S. District Judge Susan Illston on Oct. 9, 2013.

To receive full compensation for your vehicle repairs, Class Members must submit a valid Claim Form with a copy of an original repair invoice or receipt plus proof of payments for repairs or replacement of parts on a Settlement Class Vehicle by April 10, 2014. Class Members do not need to take any action to obtain the warranty extension, which will cover repairs for the affected vehicles within eight years of the original purchase or lease date of the vehicle, with no mileage limitation.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members of the Honda engine defect class action settlement include all current and former owners or lessees of one or more of the following Honda vehicles equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with Variable Cylinder Management (“VCM-2”), purchased or leased in the United States:

  • 2008-2013 Honda Odyssey

Same issue with 2004 Honda Odyssey, along with several other defects! I thhink Honda is an extremely crooked company! That does not care sbout the safety of its consumers! I would never recommend anyone to ever purchase or own any Honda vehicle!!

  2. infromedconsumer says:

For all of you, call 1-888-888-3082. Have your VIN number in hand as they will need this to check your vehicle for inclusion in the class action. Warranty has been extended 8 years on the affected vehicles. My 2011 is covered until 2019. Make sure they (the Honda dealer) does all engine work necessary and not just a change of spark plugs and coils, as this issue causes engine damage.

    1. Laurie says:

Is my Honda v6 eligible for any compensation towards repairs on misfire since the eligibility for the class action lawsuit expired in 2014 and I just have the problem now in 2017?

  3. Allredpixels says:

I have a 2010 Pilot. It took me awhile to figure the problem out, and after new spark plugs and “googling” I have the vehicle running. I did call Honda of America Support and they told me the vehicle was not part of this settlement and would offer no further assistance on this subject, except that I my passenger airbag needed to be replaced. I did ask for the issue to be escalated and I also asked if they had a customer ombudsman that could look into the issue – “no”. I also talked to the Acura Dealer service manager who politely smiled and said it would be $169 for 1 hr assessment and then $369 for a leak down test – and then he could recommend an action. FYI, my problem is on cylinder #1. The plug eventually fouls, the engines misfires and the dashboard lights up. And, I’m adding 1qt oil every 750 to 1000 miles. And, the oil after a couple 100 miles is black and smells burnt.

My next stop is to try VCM muzzler solution. – you need to google it.

BTW – Have you found out what “compliance bushings” do? Pilot, Odyssey … well, it appears that Honda put oil filled bushings in the front end suspension that isolated engine vibration from the front suspension. I now have a bill for >$800 for their replacement as the bushings rubber cracked and the oil leaked out. Although this issue is related VCM, this was not included in the settlement :-(

My perspective is that Honda engineering pushed VCM a little to much to get their EPA rating up 1 or 2 miles to a gallon.

And finally – my wife loves this car – I’m ready for a divorce – from the car, not my wife :-)

  4. Bluhm says:

Original owner of an ’09 Odyssey. Had cylinder 1 misfire 6/15 and repaired, had the same issue 11/16 also repaired, now having the same issue AGAIN 5/17 six months later. Was never notified of any issue and out of pocket $331.53 before this third repair. Really disappointed with Honda right now.

  5. THINH PHAM says:

I bought 2009 Honda Odyssey new and now have problems with engine number 4 and 5 misfired. Mechanic already replace all spark plus and ignition coin but problem still exist. where and who can fix the problems. Dealer said they can not fixed and recommend to buy new van.

  6. ALPHA says:

THIS IS THE 3RD TIME I’M HAVING THIS ISSUE. I AM THE SECOND OWNER AND I BOUGHT IT FROM A HONDA DEALERSHIP.
I HAD A TUNE UP THE 1ST TIME , THE SECOND TIME AFTER MY OIL CHANGE THE VSA AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DISAPPEARED . NOW ON MY THIRD STRIKE. REALLY TIRED OF IT . ARE WE STILL COVERED FOR REPAIR OR AM I TOO LATE TO THE PARTY?

  7. Matthew Jones says:

I bought a 2009 accord coupe and was never told about this lawsuit or recall. This is the 3rd time in a month and a half I’ve had a misfire in cylinder 3. 1st time replaced plugs, 2nd time was told it was a bad injector, this time they told me to take to Honda cause of the recall. I take it to Honda and they inform me recall is over.

    1. JS says:

I know it’s been a few months since you posted this but thought I would answer in the event that this could help you or others. Currently, I am having my 08 Honda Accord repaired for this exact issue. Unfortunately the misfire “8 yr extended” warranty for my car expired last year in May. I reached out to Honda corporate and they are paying for some of the cost to repair it. For anyone having this issue it may be worth calling them to see if anything can be done even if the warranty extension has expired.

      1. Seth says:

How much did you end up paying for the work done to your car? I also have a 08 Honda Accord

  8. scott tomberlin says:

I bought a 2011 Honda pilot used from a Honda dealer and was never informed of this issue- Is my Pilot still covered under the extended warranty under the settlement until 2019?

  9. John Chacko says:

my 2009 Honda accord 4 cylinder has check engine flashing, VSA, Triangle all on. I have been having these issues for last few months. I have not fully repaired yet. When a class action suits settled like this, someone must notify all customers.
It seems the lawyers are the only one rich of these suits and poor customers of products are left in the dark to defend for themselves…

    1. Andrea Simmons says:

I too have the check engine light flashing, VSA, Triangle and I had to have it fixed my self with a total out of pocket cost $606. And it’s under a tune up. That the warranty doesn’t cover. I wish they would just pay for it to be fixed. Nothing more nothing less. Plus this makes the 3rd time in 4 months I’ve had to pay 300 bucks to get my truck fixed. :( :(

  10. Brandy says:

I bought my 2010 new and have been the only owner and I need to opt in to this settlement and have my car fixed. I was never notified of this class action suit. Someone please HELP!!!
