Holiday party transportation overview:

  • Who: Consumers can take advantage of several options, including taking an Uber or Lyft, to stay safe while traveling this holiday season.
  • Why: The holiday season is a common time for accidents that involve consumers driving.
  • Where: Nationwide

Getting safely from place to place is likely a priority for many consumers during the holiday season, and, these days, there are a variety of ways to stay safe on the roadways while enjoying all that the winter festivities have to offer.

One of the safest ways to get around this holiday season is to take advantage of services offered by rideshare companies such as Uber or Lyft. However, consumers can also take steps to stay safe if choosing to drive themselves.

Consumers planning to drive themselves this holiday season will want to make sure that, among other things, their cars are in good running condition and that they are not only in good rest but also prepared in the case of an emergency.

Traveling by car during the holiday season has the highest fatality rate of any major means of transportation, according to the National Safety Council (NSC).

National Safety Council reports one-third of holiday accidents caused by alcohol impairment

Alcohol is also an issue.

The NSC reported a third of fatal accidents during the holiday season involve alcohol impairment and “hundreds” of individuals reportedly die every year in crashes on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving  Day and Christmas Day.

The NSC advises consumers to avoid driving while drowsy, prepare vehicles for winter conditions, make sure all passengers are properly buckled up and put away cellphones while driving during the holidays.

The NSC also advises drivers to practice defensive driving and designating a sober driver in order to ensure guests “make it home safely after a holiday party.”

Alcohol-impaired driving led to more than 10,100 car crash deaths in 2019, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.

Consumers advised to schedule Uber, Lyft rides in advance

When choosing to take an Uber or Lyft home after a holiday event, a consumer may be better off if they make sure to schedule their ride in advance to ensure they can get home within their most desired time frame.

Safewise advises car owners to be proactive in taking care of their vehicles during the holiday season, with car trouble a “common issue” for travelers during the holiday season.

“Car trouble is a common issue for travelers during the holidays,” Safewise said. “You don’t want to end up stuck on the side of the road in cold weather instead of tucked in around the table with a piece of Grandma’s homemade pie.”

Safewise advises consumers to stay hydrated, share copies of trip itineraries, carry a cellphone and charger, and make frequent rest stops, among other things, when driving during the holidays.
