Ride-hailing company Uber recently released a major safety report which included startling sexual abuse statistics: 5,981 reports of sexual assault in 2017 and 2018. The sexual assault figures included 464 reports of rape. Nineteen deaths caused by physical assaults were also reported during this two-year period.
According to Uber’s report, 92 percent of those who reported being a victim of rape were riders using the app, and about 7 percent were drivers. The majority of the reported rape victims—89 percent—were women, and about 8 percent were men.
Uber’s report detailed several categories of sexual assault:
- Non-consensual kissing of a non-sexual body part
- Attempted non-consensual sexual penetration (attempted rape)
- Non-consensual touching of a sexual body part
- Non-consensual kissing of a sexual body part
- Non-consensual sexual penetration (rape)
The report also contained information on motor vehicle fatalities and fatal physical assault.
The newly released report with sexual abuse statistics comes on the heels of nationally reported complaints about assault and abuse on the ride-hailing app. A CNN investigation into this issue more than a year ago found that at least 103 Uber drivers had been accused of sexually assaulting or abusing their passengers in the four years leading up to the investigation.
In response to the CNN report, Uber announced new and improved safety measures, including working with RapidSOS to send a rider’s information to local police when and if the rider manages to use the Uber app’s emergency button in time. The company also announced it would get rid of a former policy requiring sexual assault or sexual harassment victims to enter into arbitration and required them to sign non-disclosure agreements, according to NPR.
Before releasing the report, the company warned investors that its contents could negatively impact Uber’s reputation.
“The public responses to this transparency report or similar public reporting of safety incidents claimed to have occurred on our platform …may result in negative media coverage and increased regulatory scrutiny and could adversely affect our reputation with platform users,” the company said in its IPO paperwork.
Sexual abuse and assault can happen anywhere, and can be committed by anybody. In addition to the popular ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft, sexual assault has been reported in schools and in trusted organizations like the Boy Scouts of America and in churches.
A growing number of victims are coming forward with stories of their own sexual assaults, filing lawsuits not just against their abusers, but also against the organizations that allowed the abuse to take place, or even actively covered it up.
