Boy Scouts sex abuse settlement overview:

  • Who: A federal judge in Delaware has upheld a $2.46 billion settlement made by the Boy Scout’s of America.
  • Why: The scouting organization agreed to the settlement to resolve more than 80,000 claims of sexual abuse within the Boy Scouts, spanning decades.
  • Where: The case is in a Delaware federal court.

A federal judge in Delaware has upheld a $2.46 billion settlement made by the Boy Scout’s of America to resolve claims revolving around decades-worth of alleged sexual abuse cases within the organization.

In upholding what would be the largest sexual abuse settlement in US history, the judge rejected a number of appeals brought by abuse claimants and some of the organization’s insurers, reports Reuters

The judge reportedly determined the settlement agreement was made as a good faith effort to resolve more than 80,000 claims of abuse brought against the Boy Scouts by men who claim they were sexually abused by their troop leaders as children.

The Boy Scouts originally reached the settlement agreement with insurers and sex abuse claimants in February 2022, with the deal meant to provide support for the debtor’s $2.7 billion Chapter 11 plan.

The settlement had previously been approved by a bankruptcy court last September, and was supported by the organization’s two largest insurers and 86% of the abuse claimants, reports Reuters.

The Boy Scouts, meanwhile, have reportedly said they are “enormously grateful” to those who voted to approve the settlement and to abuse survivors who chose to speak out about the abuse they endured.

“We look forward to the organization’s exit from bankruptcy in the near future and firmly believe that the mission of Scouting will be preserved for future generations,” Boy Scouts of America said, in a statement.

The settlement funds are coming from the Boy Scouts, local councils, insurers, and various organizations that have charted scouting-related activities and units, reports Reuters.

A group of the organizations insurers were reportedly ultimately unsuccessful in arguing that the Boy Scouts colluded with abuse claimants in order to shift the liability onto the insurers.

Some abuse claimants, meanwhile, were also unsuccessful in their appeal that the settlement would prevent them from being able to file claims against organizations that are not part of the Boy Scouts bankruptcy, reports Reuters.

If you or a loved one was sexually assaulted or abused in an athletic, school, religious, medical, employment, camp or organizational setting, you may be eligible to file a sexual assault or abuse lawsuit.

It is insane that anyone that reads the BSA motto beginning in the cub scouts it was that motto and other manual mantras that kept my silence and caused me to endure the physical and emotional pain discomfort with reinforcement to be proud for being a loyal to the badge proud to honor scout leader as he commanded my nakedness the whole book and idea is gear toward scout leaders to teach young boys who are innocent without a clue to be trained to endure abuse in the name of doing the right thing as a good honorable loyal obedient 👦 to scout leaders first parents and authority figures heck at that age I was trained by this scout leader it would be disrespectful and shameful if I wasn’t naked when commanded has no one evaluated the age or level of education little kid could manipulated towards this evil violent kind of corrosion

So many issues in this poor Country that We all share and here We have another embarrassing, contraversial, far reaching, consequence bearing cover up that is way overdue in dealing with. I personally believe that the institution of scouting is a Good thing for the youth of the World except this one lil Problem that some predators just had to exploit and Taint the Whole institution. I wouldn’t want to be the individual whom ultimately has the task of judging this issue.

Your kinda ignorant for saying anything about how someone else deals or delt with the abuse or abuser. You should be ashamed of yourself for even saying that.
To think that punishing someone for fear or shame had crossed your mind you should shut up
