Former University of Southern California gynecologist George Tyndall, charged for sexual assault against multiple patients, has surrendered his medical license, according to the Medical Board of California.
The medical board accused Tyndall of sexually abusing five women. The women’s sexual misconduct claims allege that he groped and fondled them and said suggestive things to them during their exams at the USC student health center.
“The incidents outlined in the Board’s accusation against George Tyndall are egregious violations,” said Kimberly Kirchmeyer, who serves as the Board’s executive director. “On behalf of California consumers, the Board achieved the highest level of patient protection with the surrender of Tyndall’s license.”
His license would have expired on Jan. 31, 2020, but his surrender of the license became effective on Sep. 5, 2019. This comes after his license was suspended by the medical board last year, which came after his retirement from USC in 2017 following their investigation into his alleged sexual misconduct.
Tyndall was accused of sexual assault and subsequently arrested in June 2019. He was charged with 18 counts of sexual penetration as well as 11 counts of sexual battery by fraud, according to NBC News. These sex abuse cases involved a total of 16 young women between the ages of 17 and 29 who were his patients at the USC student health center between 2009 and 2016.
During his nearly three decades as a gynecologist at USC, Tyndall treated countless patients. Many came forward with their traumatic stories of abuse and assault, but many more may still have yet to come forward.
More than 700 women have so far filed individual civil lawsuits against Tyndall and USC in California state court. Separately, a class action lawsuit filed by former patients against USC has ended in a $215 million settlement agreement.
Tyndall continues to deny any wrongdoing and has pleaded not guilty.
Filing a Sexual Assault Lawsuit
Sexual assault can happen anywhere, including in trusted organizations like schools, hospitals, places of work, and more. Litigation over sexual abuse and assault has been filed against the Boy Scouts of America, colleges, and high schools, among others.
Litigation often includes claims against the organizations which allowed the abuse to take place along with the perpetrators themselves.
If you or someone you love has been a victim of sexual assault, even if the abuse happened years ago, you may be able to join this lawsuit investigation. Of course, filing a lawsuit cannot take away the pain, suffering, and trauma caused by abuse or assault, but it can at least help to provide monetary compensation as well as hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
